Beginner build advice - starting from an amp board

Good morning DIYAudio 🙂

I've spent the last few days reading through the Class D forum after stumbling across this fantastic thread on AVS forum.

I would love to build a basic 100-200WPC (up to 500W per channel depending on cost) stereo class D amp to run a pair of Monoprice PA speakers for my children's sports games, but have no idea where to start.

I know Class D is complicated so I would only consider starting from a pre-assembled amp board, but aside from that, I have no idea what the other requirements are?

Is it as simple as buying any amp board on ebay and adding a laptop power supply? I do understand that there are some crap boards on ebay so it would be good to know what parts to look at.

Is there any sort of basic info post that would possibly put the basic building blocks together?

There are a few posts on the subject here, but most are focused on building everything from scratch, not from an amp board, and most are from many years ago.

Really appreciate any help in getting started!

Those are 8 ohm speakers. That means you'll need some relatively high supply voltages to even reach 100W/channel. That rules out laptop power supplies, which generally max out at ~19v.

It also rules out the amp boards boards I'm most familiar with. The higher power boards on my radar are based on the IRS2092 chip. You can find some on ebay designed by LJM, a member here. There are threads here on his L30d and L20D.

They'll need dual rail power supplies (ie +-50v). That's outside my current interest, but I did bookmark this Abeltec supply. There is a thread about it on here somewhere.

DUG,

I did read through parts of that thread and have to admit that a lot of it quickly got over my current depth of knowledge in electronic circuits (which is admittedly limited to my few college courses many years ago) 🙂 I'll look back through though when I have some more time to see if I can pull out some info to use.

easp,
I did start looking into the IRS2092 chip as well. Thanks for the heads up on LJM. I saw a bunch of IRS2092 boards on ebay but I know there are a bunch of garbage out there so it's good to know a trusted source. This seemed to be the closest to "easy" DIY that I found for the power levels I'm looking for. I also found a thread about the Abeltec supply and how to mod it to work appropriately. That may be the route I go. Unfortunately, I'm living in the middle east so getting parts is especially difficult 🙁 I would need to place 1 order and get everything I need all in 1 go.

I may try out an "easy" laptop power supply based build. Any suggestions on a good beginner kit to go with there?

For a quick and easy project for use with a surplus laptop brick, I'd probably try a TDA7498 board. It'll have some headroom if you upgrade to a 24 or 32v power supply later.

The simplest thing to source would be a board that has most of the supporting bits integrated, like a volume pot, RCA inputs, and a barrel jack for a power brick. I think people have had good luck with this Sanwu TPA7498 board. Or maybe this one rated up to 36v and 160W/c with a TDA7498E, for even more upgrade headroom.
