I currently have a DIRAC (MiniDSP SHD) 2.2 system (subs are SVS 3000 Micro).
Please take a look at my rough floor-plan, open-plan, glass and openings everywhere, one speaker in a corner the other next to the opening going to the dining room. The 5.4 x 5.8m living room has a cathedral ceiling, wooden floors throughout.
The subs and correction really help with the room. I should mention that room treatments are out of the question and the speaker placement can't change.
So if I was to replace my speakers (MTM TL floorstanders with 5" woofers and ribbon tweeters, which I think are probably overkill now I have the subs) with DIY active (CamillaDSP with DAC8X 8-ch DAC), what should I be thinking about, line array?

See how the sound propagates from the front speakers (and centre) along the diagonal in the room? I'd see if you can set up something similar in your room. It'll be better than smooshing the speakers up against the wall and your head against the other wall.

Another option could be to arrange the speakers by the window on the right and have the listening position off the wall by the hall to the dining room.

I agree. And with 5x5 m to work with there's plenty of space. It's just a matter of finding an arrangement that works well.I've seen worse. Think near field, and more sound absorbing rugs and furniture.

I had two active commercially available speakers from KEF and B&W, both with some DSP and I couldn't get myself to like either one. Both also used 'Class D' amplifiers (A/B for KEF on tweeters) so perhaps that did not help but DSP available through the speakers never 'sounded right' to me but then neither came with DIRAC or similar.

I would use relative narrow directive speakers if possible. A narrow horn or waveguide on the tweeter and cardioid woofers would be perfect for that But that last one is very hard to design (i can't) so i probally would use a more standard bass section, and try to use waveguide for the mid and treble frequencies.
Acoustic treatment (especially in the sub section) will also help a lot with good sound.

Dump/divorce whoever is telling you no moving the speakers/no room treatments. Then move somewhere with a better listening room.

Plus in time they might move somewhere bigger, build a dedicated room etc etc. Who knows😉
Here's my smallish 60° MEH musings.
Could get 3" mids on no problem.
Compression driver on the end could be a 1" like the group buy Peerless Tymphany.. etc
I reckon in your room start with 1 X 8" and 2 X 3" drivers and see.
With a rear enclosure you'd see 60 to 65Hz low really nice bass.
Sound would be off the scale compared to a vertical line of passive radiators in a floor stander sending frequencies reflecting all over the shop.
The coverage and eveness over the listening area and sound even in the kitchen vastly better too (esp on the diagonal).
I'll shut up now🙂

There is nothing wrong with the sound per se, I just think that bulky floorstanders are unnecessary with the subs and severely limit my placement options.
Is this the room you want to clone a KEF Blade for ????
Your room isn't that terrible. It requires your speakers to be tight to the front wall. One of them will be in a corner and one will have open space instead of a side wall. To balance that you would want to put an absorber on the first reflection point. You would also benefit from absorption behind the couch. Since that is ruled out, your next best bet is directionality. There isn't enough space for OB so consider cardioid, your best bet for placement-independence. Take a look at the Sigberg Saranna development thread on ASR for an example.
