Hi,
for quite some time the idea of making sub as a bed base has been in my head. My matresses are double size (6'x3') and wanted to use maybe 2 or 3 15" woofers. I would make it as heavy as possible with 1" thick MDF and lots of bracing so that thing won't move from there. This way I could have a real big sub without using valuable space since the bed is already in my room. Is this a good idea or am I just being silly? I was thinking of doing it as a transmission line but it would be the first time for me as I never built one before. Or maybe just go with the traditionnal vented box.

It is a great idea indeed. Take care of the bracing though. If you build it as a transmission line, the "channeling" will serve also as bracing. But with so large volume why are you thinking of bass reflex? If not for transmission line, better go for sealed enclosure.
The only drawback i can see is, that after you will build it, you will spend all your time in your bedroom listening to the music (lucky you!) 😉

Actually I have made it the other way around.
I have a kingsize waterbed with a big volume under the matress, a couple of hours of work turned it into a bass absorbent 🙂
I drilled a bunch of holes in the side panels and stapled fabric and fiberglass to the inside for damping and broadening of Q.

When I did it I had the bed (obviously) in the listening room, now it is not in the direct listening room but still my apartment is "open" and the bed does probably a little good anyway.

haha you guys crack me up! Yeah I didn't even think about about a sealed enclosure! With an enclosure that large it should give me a nice flat response tuned real low. Perfect! That "X" horn desing is a little bit to wicked for me I think lol. The bed could also be used as a good body massager. Think of all the possibilities!

Quality wise I already have 2 boxes I built not long ago using high quality 12" drivers that has alot of chest thumping bass but almost no sub. The boxes are tuned to 45hz and cut at 60hz so I am missing alot on the low.
Anyone has suggestions for drivers? Like I said I want maximum SPL. I will be using DIY amps that I will build after I have the boxes so wattage can be anything. Maximum external dimensions will be about 72" x 36" by 17". That would give me about 23 cubic feets of internal volume without any bracing or anything.

I'm using Sigma 15's in my PA system right now, and I must say that they SUCK HORRIBLY, SPL-wise. I wish I'd bought the better ones.
I'm sure, however, that the Executioner line would do what you needed. All the 15"+ Executioners are 100 dB+ efficient. (Take 3 dB off if you put it in a sealed box--I learned this the hard way!)
The ones at the very bottom, the "Future ExecutionerX 15 and 18", are very exciting to read about, and I would LOVE to see some of those in a horn-loaded configuration... I'll bet you'd have room for that under your bed!
Whatever you decide, let's see some pictures as you're building it!
And lemme know whereabouts you are so when you get it done I can drop by for a massage. 😀
