That would be my first thought. Rated current is lower, but if that is not needed they work. If higher current or dissipation is needed D40K can be found surplus, often for cheap(er) than the BC’s. Getting a 65V grade of them may be hard, but again, that may not be needed. What probably is important is not having those stupid internal base-emitter resistors that all modern medium-power types have.
