I'm rebuilding my P3A, and i have both BC546A and BC546B home, which ones should i use? The only difference i can spot is the hFE values, with the B-version being slightly higher (200/450 vs. 110/220).
Nelson prefers high beta.
And highest beta have 546 C, then B then A
So if you can find 546C, use them
If not 546B will work as good

And what Rod Elliot prefers we possibly don't know.
I guess that the B version would be preferable as it seems discussions elsewhere seems to suggest that high beta is preferable in diff pairs. I might be wrong though...

I asked Rod similar question, I wanted to use 546b because I run out of A's. He replied "make sure that the input stage especially uses the same type, so as to minimise the voltage differential at the input (for minimum output offset voltage)."
Seems to work just fine with both.
