Bass Pedal Repair

I picked up two broken bass pedals in hopes of eventually fixing them. Came to find out that my friend's bass needs a little work. So my questions are: what can I use to as a replacement for a bass for testing and what are some good books on the subject of electronics in muscial equipment? I'm currently reading Music Engineering. The pedals in question are MXR Bass DI+ and a Digitech Turbo Flange Stereo Flanger.

Thanks,
Art

There is nothing special about the signal. You might want an actual bass for fine tuning of tonal mods or something, but just to make them work, use anything. A guitar works, but on my bench, I just run a line out from the bench stereo. The local radio station's music works well enough and it doesn't require my fingers.
