I was in their store today. They show off a plasma with 480P resolution.
$19K ?
I'd rather use a $500 DIY projector.

the $500 pj doesn't rival the resolution the panel boasts for one thing though. anyway, I was in their store here by tampa international airport, and they had a 63" Runco with hdtv decoder for 30,000
ummmmmmmmm, how the other half lives 🙂
that $500 projector will barely rival a 27" RCA tv. you are comparing apples to solid gold oranges wrapped in $100 bills....

I"d like to see you eat a gold orange wrapped in $100 bills... Therefore, the apple is BETTER, even though the orange is MORE EXPENSIVE!!! lol, you gave a bad example if ya ask me... lol... 🙂

This guy LOVES to bash Diy prjectors...haha i cant wait to get my Diy projector 😀
i cant wait to see it! you forget that i was Mr. DIY Projector...
i just dont think with what we have available to us, we can make a decent one for less than what it can be bought for...
(keep in mind i sell electronics and am around the stuff all day long, im way too picky about video quality)
post pics when you get it finished!

That makes tons of sense. 480P. That's terrible. Yeah, it looks cool hanging on a wall, but I'd take a DIY projector any day. The best deal out there is $1200 for an 800x600 projector.
What exactly is not available to us? There are only two drawbacks to an expensive DIY approch. One is the contrast ratio, although I think anything better than 300:1 is just fine. Two, the circular lines that a fresnel creates. Better than the terrible screen door effect caused by the low-res affordable projectors.
True DIY projectors are not very good. OHP-type projectors can look beautiful. Ask YWH.

Oh yeah, 30,000 for a Runco HDTV decoder! LMFAO! What a joke. Digital is digital. No longer can companies like Runco get away with using tons of expensive hardware to make analog signals look good, and make money because the richest of the rich want "the best". Or maybe they can, their customers are just too ignorant to realize that they're wasting $29,000 for no reason. If I won the lottery, I would still make a DIY projector. I'd just spend $6000 on making it.
An MPEG decoder is an MPEG decoder. I garantee that the results for the Runco is no better than the DirectTV decoder, or the Hauppauge HD-Win-TV decoder. The Runco thing probably has a built in line-doubler for SD signals, thus making it so expensive. Oooohhhh, I'm trembling. Descaler is frickin' free.

I think its great to have an opinion but, but its not kool to try to "Influence" that opinion on others. I've been watch a 19" tv for LONG time and its GREAT ...to me so how will this 100" be...think about it. the point is every one has their own likings,i dont see many thumbs downs about this project your amongst the few.there MANY factors that make a diy projector how can you compare it to retails..? and since you WORK in retail in only FAIR that you keep your customers away form this you would lose too much money...your one of "THEM" your probably a spy from Proxima

Lifter, great attitude hehe if i was rich i wouldn't buy a runco either (unless i was bill gates rich..)
**EDIT** and about the pictures...they mean nothing as you probably know they do not capture how it REALLY looks**EDIT**
wait a sec.....
You misread, the plasma costs that much, not the decoder. and btw, direct tv makes the SHITTIEST mpeg decoders on the planet, period. further, you cannot say that any decoder is as good as the next, unless ofcourse you don't know squat about it. What's inside has a lot more to do with the price tha the name does. after all, it's what made the name in the first place!

Ok, why is the DirectTV decoder crappy? Elaborate on it. And I'm not talking about reviews from some industry run magazine. I can't imagine anyone being able to tell the difference between the Runco and a cheap one.
Runco made it's name by making ridiculously nice analog projectors over the years. They spare no expense, and they manufacture everything in the US (which also costs more). They are completely targeted to rich people who feel they need the most presitigious products, and they can only profit by charging a lot more than it's worth (granted, they cost more to make, but they still need to overcharge because their clientel is so small). Doesn't mean that it's MGEG decoder is any better than the next. It's just like CD players w/ digital outputs (quality of D/A converters vary). They all do the same exact thing, and one isn't going to sound any better or worse than the other.
I'm not an expert, but I do know how the industy works and how makers of top-of-the-line products target the extremely wealthy.
