BALDWIN GERMANIUM AMPLIFIER

As I recall it was a house number, but the standard NTE replacement Germanium PNP power transistor as a pair worked just fine to repair it.

The driver transformer was quite hefty, that would be the piece that might have had the most effect on the sound.

There is a schematic of a typical small germanium power amplifier here http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/solid-state/212212-germanium-preamp.html .

You would add one stage to this to make a higher power amplifier. Note how the bias is adjusted and provided through the interstage coupling transformer. That is what I suspect gives the sound you are looking for. Since a matched pair of germanium power transistors are around $75.00 you might want to try using silicon for the driver and output stage.

The design there also shows transformer winding ratios! That should get you started.

Best of luck.
