Could anyone recommend a good reasonably priced balanced volume control. Does this mean the control must have four poles or six. I can't afford the $200 dollars to buy some of the attenuators I've seen such as the shalco. Any suggestions would be welcome. Thanks.

howzabout a dual MDAC?
Some of the others may scream, but think about some of the MDAC volume controls, specifically the TI/Burr Brown PGA2610 or Crystal Semiconductor CS3310. They have 2 matched sections which would work well for balanced volume controls. You can get parts cheap: most companies will give you a piece or two as engineering samples 🙂
Definately cheaper than $200, but these two devices are serially controlled, so a microcontoller would be convenient.

Although the description for these ALPS pots say 2 ganged, they actually have 4 ganged sections...and they're dirt cheap. They even have a motorized version...check their site under potentiometers.
