room size
Hi DeltaStar, I am going to send a picture of my room which is 21' long x 14' wide with 8' ceilings. I took a picture earlier but the bay window in my basement let too much light in so the speakers came out too dark. Later tonite will be better.

blgtrio,
I tried parallel 1+1 and 2+2, after playing with the setup, the best sound is when the 2+2 position straight ahead, the 1+1 on the outside pointing straight at the listening position. This way the soundstage is very big, the Acoustat beaming problem is much improved, the highs are all there.
Still with the TAD2001/horn and 1+1, the sound is much superior in term of frequency balanced, imaging. The detail level of the TAD surpass the Acoustat, and is clearly heard. I will find a way to integrate the TAD/horn with 1+1 and 2+2, the width of this room is barely wide enough.

Unison845, have you played the 1+1's and rhe 2+2's together at the same time. It would be like having model 6's. I'll bet the wall of sound is huge and the bass is shaking the room. I used to run my 2+2's and 1+1's together and it was awesome. I'm looking forward to doing it again.
Unison, if you toe in the 2+2 just a little bit how does that effect the sound quality? When you run the Tad2001/ horn you cross that at 900 and above , then the Acoustat from 900 and below is that correct? Are you using a passive or active crossover? What slope are you using?
Unison, Your narrow space probably causes some issues with the bass. Does it sound to thick or heavy in the bass? The midbass may be congested as well.
When I toe in the 2+2 the soundstage shrink, when I toe in just the 1+1 I still get big soundstage.
I crossed the tad2001/ horn 12db/oct LR abd use the futterman for the 1+1, 10w Se845 for the Ta. It sounded much better than the 1+1 or the 1 and 2 together.
In this small room the bass did not sounded heavy nor boomy.

When i had the 1+1s 2+2s with the 2+2s .....i had to use a Apogee Duetta sig ribbon mid-tweeter with them to get the sound i liket..........but then later after geting the Acoustats M2,M3,M4.......i wounted all of them to sound like my 1+1s just more.....not diff.....
So i just put a frames togather that let me put 2-9" panels side by side flat!.......... not with the 30%arke......an WOW the sound of the 1+1 was back but better....so then i went to 3ea 9"panels flat....14" off the floor so the cen of the panels is at ear level an bego...... BIG soundstage......great bass......like a big 1+1 but better off the floor
The 2+2s sound great if you have a 30' x 40' room.....my room is only 18'x 25.....
in your room if you can put the on the long wall.....
an then you can move them 15"apart an you well get better sound.....well its better too me
Good luck have fun......
Long live Acoustats............'

Acoustat 2+2's I found never worked well in small rooms, they somehow cancelled out the sound, required extreme amounts of power to get any amount of sound pressure level, I was throughly disgusted with them and kept them in storage for many yrs trying them out in different rooms as I moved around, Finally I found a room they work in, a room many others such as Apogee's and Infinity's don't fair so well, The change in performance was mind blowing, they fill the room easy at low power levels, ex same equipment, in a 15x21 room preamp was at 2oclock and they sounded smothered, in this room they breathe with excitement at 10 oclock and louder SPL sitting 60' away, odd to as you walk closer the SPL lowers as well, many people that have heard them can't understand why drop off as you get closer, they have tremendous bass power at a far distance, you can feel it, I've seen 20hz on my sound anaylizer, on Hell freezes over. Not to shabby. Al

Hi Al, I'm glad you shared that info. I would never have imagined the SPL could be stronger further away. Tremendous bass power at a far distance. WOW!
Acoustat speaker is the most dynamic ESL out there and can push volume of air if they have 4 panel minimum per side. My friend has the monitor 4 with servo amp and he can play any type of music pretty high level without strain. Even in my small room there is plenty low frequency information.
The problem with them is the beaming, moving your head about an inch either side and the image changes drastically. By integrating the horn system, the problem is completely eliminated, the horn has much larger sweet spot , and not only that, every single detail is much clearer, it become truly an awsome speaker.

The 1+1 was bad about the beaming.....but with 3ea 9" panels flat you get none of that............the Acoustat Xs were my frist esl with the servo tube amps....but X setup.... there panels on the floor...........vary dark an the servos could not keep up....but like you say BIG FAT bass....pople freakout no one ever had that bass..
one thing.... i dont like the sound of the Acoustat 8" panels.....thats used in the X,3.4s
An i get your point about the horn... The Apopgee Mid-tew help a lot....but i get
great highs out of my setup now...
An what a room DeltaStar..............60'....away.... to bad most well never know!..............you may well be on the moon...hehe....but i think your right on all....like to hear M4 or 6+6s in your room....over kill is there a thing..hehe
thanks to all.... for all this info on Acoustats...... horns, ribbons.....long
as it works.... i can dig it

tyu, when it come's to clarity and transparency, the 2+2 are better than the Apogee Diva Mid and Tweet in my situation.
Unison845 Do you time align the horns to the Acoustats?

Yes, i do align the horn, it's the Stereolab 400Hz horn, not too big, easy to setup.

Hi DeltaStar, What associated equipment are you using with the 2+2's? Have you tried different amps in your huge soundroom? If so which amplifier gives the best overall sound quality? If you tried both tube and SS which sound did you prefer?
SS Amps... Hafler d250, Bryston 4b, Carver 7t mono blocks, Carver 4.0t, BK 250 MB's,
Tubes... VTL 150, AR D250mk2
ClassD...H20-S250, LC audio Zapulse 2.3se mb's
I prefer the H20-S250 icepower the best, good solid bass and the midrange seems to me better than the tubes, like the sound is just real clean and flawlessly crystal clear.
SS wise the Carver 7t mb's I deemed best of what I have tried.
As far as front end, Oppo direct into amps, LP's Threshold T2 pre and VPI with ET-2 arm and Madrigal Carnige 2 cartridge
The Zapulse 2.3se with a good power supply in front sounds very good as well 🙂

Hmm, ICEPower modules really don't like the capacitance of ESLs...The H2O is a 250A ICEPower Module with a linear power supply (monster tranny, rectifier and nice big reservoir caps - not unlike like a Class A amp power supply) as opposed to a SMPS that are in the ASP series....
My ICEpower 1000ASP had a hard time on my Model 3's (maybe because of the SMPS??), while my Krell KSA-50 Clone really handled them the best.....try a KSA XXX someday, I bet you would be surprised....
Or maybe it is due to the Class A type Power supply is what really lights them up?

Hey John65B, I used a Krell KSA300 and FPB300 on my Acoustat 2+2's. Then tried an Audio Research D125 hybrid tube amp. They were three wonderful sounding amps that drove the 2+2's very easily.

I heard my 2+2's with jolida 100w tube amp when I bought them, sounded great.
At home, ran them with hafler xl280. Sounded good but lacked the airiness
of the tube amp.
Replaced the hafler with a nad 208, sounds best, especially low end.
Drums sound incredible, very tight.
This amp can output 900w into 2 ohms and has
4db of headroom. It also barely gets warm.
If you find one ( they don't pop up often) get one.
I paid $600 for mine and it came with a matching nad 106 preamp.
Ideally, you'd line up a dozen amps and decide what's best, so ymmv and good luck!
