B52 15" sub matrix 1000 , driver and amp upgrade for more SPL

i just got this used box as a gift
the specs says 400 watts for LF duty
is a reflex system

specs below
  • Subwoofer Freq. Response: 40 Hz; 120 Hz +/- 3dB
  • Sound Pressure Level (1w/1m): 102 dB (half space)
  • Max. SPL: 127 dB @1% THD
  • Weight: 120 lbs
  • Dimensions (Transport): 28" (H) x 19" (W) x 23" (D)
can i swap that 15" for a High Power driver and bypass the internal amp with a 3kw rack amp i have collecting dust
to coax out some more SPL ? of the box

i have the amp already, just need to invest on a suitable highpower driver.
any candidate drivers ?

I was looking at 15tbx100 but recommended vented box volume was around 3.5cuft and the B-52 box is almost 8cuft , i guess some less volume cause I was using the external dimensions , less the plate amp and some bracing , maybe 6cuft.

If you literally just want to swap the woofer only, you also need to pay attention to the box tuning frequency (fb). The port area and length control this (in combination with the enclosure volume), and it interacts heavily with the driver to produce the final response/power handling/excursion.

If the port area is small, this will also limit the amount of excursion the system is capable of without audible chuffing/compression/other effects.

None of this means it can't be done, just that it requires some careful consideration to work well.

Less the volume occupied by driver and port, the net volume is closer to 5.3 cubic foot, around the volume of this sim for a B&C18SW115.

The B&C18TBW100 could also work in your box size, just need to cut for the 18" driver and make port adjustments appropriate for the displacement potential.

The B-52 cabinet have a 15" baffle size , so can't fit an 18 in there, i wanna see if I can swap the existing 15" driver with something that can take more watts so to make some more noise 🙂, without building anything from scratch.

Cut the hole for the 18" in the top, use the cutout to cover the 15" baffle hole 😉

Or use a B&C15TBW100, at 95 volts (about 1077 watts at the impedance minima) reaches over 125dB at Xvar of 13.5mm in 158 liters (about 5.6 cubic feet).
If your 3kw rack amp can't swing 95 volts at 8 ohms, you could go for the B&C15TBW100-4(ohm) version.
