tresch, nice work, very interesting.
I'd like to see raw drivers measurements, without crossover.

unfortunately my roomie is a little protective of these guys and I probably won't be able to drag one out for more measurements any time soon.
I can say that from listening impressions at least the off-axis response is very good.
I could have gotten some measurements of the woofer by itself the the tweeter is very much permanently attached to the enclosure and there'd no good way I could have pulled it out for testing without probably damaging something. 🙁

I meant measurements taken without removing drivers from enclosure.
just bypassing crossover. that way we could see how crossover functions.

That's okay. I had a feeling it was too late. But thanks anyway.
It's cool, this way I'll remember to get these measurements on the next speakers I happen across
My sound card is providing the voltage bias.
Can you elaborate? How is the microphone connected to the sound card? I have one of these and ultimately would like to test my speakers.
BTW, nice work!
TIA,
Ralf
There is actually measurements done by someone.. http://www.audioxpress.com/reviews/media/AX201DA.pdf
hi,
i got the same speakers. I added a sub (css sdx15, dayton hpsa500, ported) to it and the sound has improved a lot. it does a better job if relieved of doing the lower frequencies.
Any one here has any recommendations as to how to improve the sq of 602s.

how much would i need to spend in diy speakers (drivers and crossover costs) to beat these speakers. Any suggested designs that are clearly superior to these. looking to upgrade mine.😀

It's never that simple- it comes down to personal taste, in most instances. For example, I'd take a set of Pioneer B20s in big TLs over this type of speaker, anyday. Driver cost of mine, including the supertweeter and XO for the supertweeter, is a whopping $35 or so per. But, there's a lot of work, and you can run up the bill on cabinet materials and finishing easily enough.
But, like I say, that might not be to your taste. There are a number of designs like those at Zaph Audio that are as mature. The B&Ws hot tweeter would be an easy fix, a little extra padding. The upward tilt indicates a tuning that would stand out in a hifi shop, a very common failing of commercial speakers- they're made to sell, not to satisfy (duh!).

Hi,
Yuo have to take some toime ans effort on the cabinets and possibly
a little inventive for lowest cabinet colouration and then carefully
choose what sort of design you want.

the B&Ws are solid speakers, but they're certainly not perfect. It's a very standard 2nd order crossover fairly solidly in the middle of the vocal range, and I think this is their greatest weakness. The couple full-range speakers I've built outshine the 602s dramatically in the vocals.
In other aspects, they're pretty fantastic all-around speakers. They're ported, which I don't really like, but as far as ported boxes go they're well tuned. The cabinets themselves are very ho-hum. cheap chip-board without a lot of bracing. B&W speaks of lots of their cabinet technology in their promo vids, but very little of it is to be seen here.
So.. there's a lot of directions you can go obviously depending on what your listening preferences are and also what levels of loudness you're looking for. Care to give us a little more input in those regards?

I usually listen to classic rock, blues, jazz, metal, classical, indian classical in that order. these would be used in a home theater system also for movies. I already have a sub, so low end is not a problem. Currently the amp is yamaha rxv-663, but some time later I am going to get an integrated amp for music. My focus is speakers for music, movies dont matter, i will live with however it sounds for movies. I would prefer neutral to warmish speakers, non-fatiguing. Dont blast too often, so excessive sound levels are not needed.
I am already planning to use some sort of full ranger (maybe with some cheapo tweeter) for my desktop system. this one i want it to be a 2-way, preferrably bookshelf (can be a large bookshelf like 602). Some time later, when I have more cash, I want to make some really good speakers, in the mean time, looking to better these at not too much of a price. I am looking to invest the most in the drivers at this point. I can try to make a crossovers with cheaper capacitors and resistors available locally, these I can easily upgrade to better ones later when budget allows. inductors are i think expensive everywhere in the world🙁
I have zero woodworking skills, and I dont think my current carpenter can handle anything more than a sealed or ported, so horns and TLs are ruled out.
