On checking for a DIY Audio poster on the availability of a special type of mains transformer I sent two emails to two likely firms that didn't just supply big business but individual designers/engineers/audio enthusiasts .
I got two replies --one yesterday and one this morning from their sales directors .
The first said -quote- " that type of winding equipment has been scrapped long ago by our company and all UK business on that level transferred to China/India .
The second said --quote-"not aware of anyone still manufacturing that specialized design in the UK---- most people have moved to either toroidal or high spec.bobbin wound products as a more ----COST --effective solution .
But if you know of a small old school coil winder company nestling in the Welsh mountains by all means let us know ?
To save you the trouble this was a really specialized product .

You are asking us to recommend a company to wind something 'special' but haven't told us what is special about it. Not sure that will help anyone help.
I didn't post the specialized spec.he wanted as I was PM and didn't want to divulge who it was that wanted it.
Just trying to keep something said in private-----private.

Majestic Transformers, Poole Dorset are able to wind most transformers and they are very competitivly priced.
Have a word with them, they are human and easy to talk to, and they are all made in England!

I tried them one of the first on the list and yes they do do audio transformers but not the type wanted by the poster --- quote "we don't manufacture that type anymore ".
Thanks for the reply though.

The poster didn't get any better "joy " in the USA so its not confined to the UK but it was the UK I actually thought would "live up to their billing " .
Sadly --but honestly they said -
1- "no longer cost effective ".
2- "we scrapped that type of winding machine long ago.
Both know the UK doesn't manufacture them anymore and -quote --for both - business now transferred to China/India and "offshore " if you get his drift both were sales directors/on the board of their companies not someone lower down the company as I worded my emails to them very politely /respectfully telling them I was dealing with audio design engineers etc .

Have you tried the instrumentation transformer manufacturers in the UK and elsewhere?
Companies like Ritz.gmbh of Germany.
Transmag of the UK
There are others which I'll add once I recall them (names on the tip of my tongue, so to speak)

I tried 5/6 companies in the UK the big ones do business with offshore oil rigs/power stations /industry .
I have not tried Germany as my German is only "tourist level " although I watch German satellite channels .
The whole style of the transformer the guy wants and the special screening and the means to manufacture it now seems to be "obsolete ".

Oh I see...perhaps my suggestions would be a dead end too then, without divulging details.
As far as instrumentation transformers are concerned, I have found Ritz to be second to none.
Nothing of the same quality and high spec was available from "Instrumentation" transformer winders, in the UK or elsewhere I investigated.
I'm talking Class 0.1/0.2 for CTs, and beyond the spec for Class 0.1 instrumentation grade VTs with 150:1 ratio, and very tight phase tolerance from 50Hz to above 20kHz.

Thanks for the information Monodogenerator I will take your advice and email Ritz , dont like giving up on helping somebody.
Its not the type of spec.you posted but the actual construction but I will let you know if they reply.
Email sent to company.

It's worth a shot.
Although a German company, I had no trouble communicating in English to the engineer. Which is good, because my Deutsch is astoundingly bad. They made the whole exercise very simple for me.
I cant imagine they would be cheap, if the transformer is oddball, and low volume. I bought maybe 6 devices at the same time, which is still a very small order, and in my case an almost bespoke spec from me/our requirements
