I am in the process of putting together some sanwu monoblocks to power ceiling speakers in my kitchen. The actual amp will be in the network room and be connected to an airport express to enable airplay.
What i would like is for the speakers to turn off and on when music is detected. Is there a simple way to do this? I found one webpage that might work, but it is beyond my ability at this point (Project 38).
On a side note would it be bad if I skipped all of this and just left the amp on at all times?
Thanks in advance.

Short of placing the power on off switch in proximity of the kitchen, you won't find a simpler circuit.
Hi,
You can use a remote power switch. There are some using wifi or rf.
The only remote power switches I've found use z-wave and wouldn't work because they required a certain load. Ideally I would like to use a remote power switch of some sort. I hadn't found a viable solution so I was looking for an auto on feature.

It may be a simple circuit, but I wouldn't know where to start building it.
If you use low voltage switching of a power ON relay, you can run a cable pair to anywhere to control that relay.
Do you have anything that wakes when you enable music? I don't have any of that apple stuff ;-)
My Samsung TV turns on my power supply with the TV's USB 5V and a relay 🙂

Maybe. I'm assuming that the audio out does not have power out unless I enable the music.
Hi,
Just do a web search using this description: Azpen Remote Control Sockets Wireless Operated 30M Range US Mains Plug - 3 Pack

I also wanted a board/module to do this too. thanks for the article link, very useful!
using keywords from that i did some searchs on aliexpress.com and guess what? I think i found a module that does what we want 😀

The search i did, to find that link:

Thanks. It looks like that would go between the power supply and and the chips. The only issue i see for me would is that is looks to cap out at 15v from the power supply and i am using 24v power supplies.
Any idea if this would affect the sound quality etc...?

you can reduce the 24Vdc supply down to 15Vdc easily.
If you know that the load or current draw is constant DC then just a resistor can be used to lose that 9V of DC.
If the current draw can vary a bit then adding a Zener as a shunt regulator after the resistor copes with a small variation in current draw.

For a power supply I will use ether a step down/buck dc-dc converter or a regulator. Depends if i get any noise issues with the buck converter. Any suggestions from someone more knowable about buck converters would be appreciated.
For switching I would use a mosfet and/or a rely. I’ll work out what i will do when they come in the post.
I was thinking if using a amp board with Mute pin exposed that i would use it to mute the amp. That way i don’t have to deal with switching a few amps. The mute mode saves a lot of power. mute mode current usage is something like 50ma(?). There are tpa3116/8 stereo boards that also have standby pin/mode exposed. Which would be even better.
Heres the search for them:

I would just let them on all the time.
Even not muted the sanwu tpa3118 idle current is only about 30-50mA, if I remember correctly and assuming that my el cheapo multimeter measured it correctly.

I guess I should have asked this from the start, is there a downside to letting the Samwu boards be on 24/7?
i have a black tpa3116 board on all the time. but the metel box for it gets warm. i think that due to the noise floor its not consuming 40ma idle. I suspect that its ampliifing the noise and so consuming power. i need to check with a test meter...
so thats what a auto power off would helpful for that real world issue.
Also for battery operation amps with extras like tone boards powered by regulators, a auto power off would give a lot of peace of mind that if and when left with no more music playing, it wont drain the battery anymore 🙂.
