So I bought a copy of powerdvd 5 today. I have always liked it for playing dvd's and got a limited version with my DVD-ROM drive. So I decided to upgrade.
The coolest thing is the new CLEV(CyberLink Eagle vision) this little option allows the player to automatically tune your color and contrast controls as the movie is actually playing. Makes dark scenes look much much nicer and the colors much more vivid. If anyone is interested I can take some screenshots of some various movies of side by side scenes.
Here is their little speel:CLEV™ is a new revolutionary technology that intelligently adapts video contrast and colors across the scenes in a movie to deliver superb and rich details. CLEV™ also helps to alleviate the problem where some movie scenes are too dark or bright by adjusting the color and contrast to bring you the best image possible. It is also ideal for correcting detail loss inherent in LCD/CRT monitors.
It's a cool feature that I have been waiting forever for some company to come out with.

Please post samples...
I will go and buy this if it works as well as it looks like it might. Thats my biggest complaint while watching movies is detail lost to contrast. Thanks a bunch for pointing this program out..

I'd like to see some side-by-side comparisons if it isn't too much trouble. does it have any settings or anything that you can play with? I'll probably get it anyway since I'm a fan of PowerDVD. (Although BSPlayer is still THE player, but cant do legit DVDs)

Ok sorry guys but it's just not possible to take a screen cap of it. I tried doing it's built in screen capture but when I open up the captured screen file it just uses the original colors and not the enhanced. I also tried using the printscreen feature but all I get is a black screen. If anyone has any suggestions on how to make it capture right I'd appreciate it. It's a really sweet video enhancement but it just doesn't want to be seen 🙂. I'll keep trying for you.
mario yea you wont be able to use the print screen ever for a DVD movie( copy protection BOOOO) maybe you could find a prog online that does work, Or take a pic of the Output Image from your LCD panel/ projector. thats the only thing I can think of.

I tried some more tweaking with settings to see if I could get the picture capture to work. I could not but then I realized that Cyberlink has a trial version on their website. Here's a link to a download of it ftp://gatekeeper.dec.com/pub/micro/pc/simtelnet//win95/mmedplay/pdvd5_trial_0603.exe
If that link doesn't work you can simply go to their website and go to trial version. It only works for 14 days and plays for 30 minutes at a time but it still lets you play with the the auto contrast and auto color.

I've tried 5.0 and was less impressed by it. For me the major drawback is that a 1GHz Athlon is too slow for dvd playback!?!
I get a lot off artefacts playing dvd/mpeg2.
The CLEV is fun too play with, you can select partial screen clev, so you get the left side of the pic normal and the right side with clev. It makes a huge difference, but i wouldn't call it 'better'. It enhances color/contrast/brightness so you get the most of all 3. But its hardly realistic. All faces turn bright red etc.
So my advice: stick with 4.0 or get a fast HTPC and turn clev off
