How about Kevlar driver can it go 35 Hz in 30 liters enclosure?
I think it would be archivable, and you are saying it has very good mid range as well.

Eugene,
It's fun to get good result from cheap drivers. Depending on your goals, but setting a target of 35hz in 2way is just unrealistic.
Compromising between volume, port to group delay and extension will happen no matter what, especially with 6.5" woofer.
Download the Jeff B's Woofer and Box Simulator to know more about the capability of the woofer in a box.
Cheers

P17WJ they looked a shadow of their former self.
Sounds like me now I've lost my youth 😀
We tried to come up with a budget reference three way design a few years back but it basically stagnated. http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/multi-way/153415-diy-audio-3-way-reference-project.html#post1951172
Tony.
This is where I'm heading with the PMS design I currently have under construction.

I agree Henry. Few drivers in the 6 to 6.5 range will give the results Paul has achieved.
I just did a quick model of the CW2194 in a 30 litre enclosure with a 50mm port and it comes in with a respectable Fb47.75hz and an F3 @42.46hz. That's a pretty good result and should give a nice flat response right through its range. Port speeds a little higher than I like but I don't think chuffing is a issue here.
One thing I will say about the Response drivers is that they have a very (you might think I'm daft but...) English/European sound to them. Similar to Mordants or even some of the earlier Kefs. I know it sounds weird but thats how they sound to my ear and having owned B&W's and Kefs and Mordants I have got pretty good a knowing the type of tonality they produce.
Oh and the above results were run through Unibox which I find to be very accurate and I also use Jeff's sim as well to check results. Kinda overkill but I hate designing something and then find its rubbish.

Note that the ZX spectrums box tuning is 39Hz so the 34Hz F3 is below tuning and therefore only usable at low power. in ported boxes excursion goes up dramatically below tuning and in general if you want decent power handling the signal needs to be rolled off below tuning frequency so I would say that the ZX spectrum is more accurately a 40Hz speaker 🙂

Paul did say that woofers he used for ZX Spectrum are identical to Scan Speak, I'm sure that both Chinese and Indian versions are clones from either Peerless or Scan Speak. That is the reason Ralph feels that they sound in European fashion similar to Kefs and B&W, so Ralph you are not daft, as you are not the only one who thinks the same way.

Peerless India made very good stuff on their own, they are major supplier for GR-Research.
SB Acoustics designer came from SCANSPEAK, so as Wavecor, but to say the driver are clones and expect to perform the same is just wishful thinking.
SB price and performance is the best in the market for now, and you can see the growing well known speaker manufacturer uses them.

Eugene,
Do you mean "achievable" when you use "archivable"? It confused me a few times when reading your posts.
I have SB Acoustics 10" woofers that will be put to use shortly. While they can't match Scanspeak for specifications, I doubt I will hear a difference if back-to-back, and even if I do, the price differential can't be substantiated to my wife. 🙂

the 8" CW2196 I found to have such high distortion as to be unlistenable, should have spent my money on something better.....
You are right, achievable...
Do you get SB Acoustics from this supplier WES Components ?
The original plan, is to use 6"-7" in 2 way with 30 liters box that gives 39Hz and provides F3 satisfying 34 Hz.
Just what Paul did with his Amiga and ZX Spectrum designs, I was hoping we can do similar here in Australia and NZ... without spending a fortune.

But it can be improved with the crossover, right?

Essential Audio | Australia | Guitar Speakers | Bass Speakers | PA Speakers | Hi Fi SPeakers | Home Theatre | Cabinet Hardware sells SB acoustics.
i dont know the 8" CW2196, but you cant fix distortion from crossover.

Pretty much a generalistic statement. I run these in two different builds to date and distortion isn't an issue. Proper enclosure modelling and good quality crossovers are a must with these or the bass response will and can sound muddy and indistinct.
We used a Sugden a21se to power them and I have to say they sounded very good. The reviewer is correct too this amp isnt a boombox bass type, rather more refined. Bass is detailed and doesn't lack but doesn't overpower either. Takes about 20 minutes for the amp to warm up to operating temperature and at that point the bottom end is working nicely. I spent a number of hours listening to this amp and would buy one tomorrow but I would need to get a divorce the next day😱
I currently use a Onkyo amp for both HT and Music and these amps are extremely bass heavy so I run with all filtering off and adjust bass & treble to suit.
