AUSTRALIA DIY SPEAKERS Jaycar HELP!

I came across 6.5" Jaycar's version of popular HiVi speakers., specs are almost the same the design just a slightly different., I been told that they are made at the same factory as HiVi speakers. They would perform in the same way as the original HiVi. The only obvious difference is that they are not shielded and it has paper cone instead of aluminum.

Actually Jaycar does sell small 1" to 3" full range drivers branded as HiVi or Swans., for bigger drivers they are sold under RESPONSE Jaycar's brand.

Priced very reasonable, almost for free, consider that they are sold in Australia.

I would love that someone be able to design 2 way or 3 way with some affordable tweeters maybe also from Jaycar. Something that is specifically tailored for the Australian consumers on the budget.

As I know similar drivers been used on ZX Spectrum by Paul Carmody, the driver can archive 34 Hz.

Personally I don't have experience and enough knowledge in designing crossovers.

It wold be great if someone can take up such interest and design something similar on budget and with good sound.

As most of the known DIY speakers in Australia priced well high and using premium European drivers Vifa, Scan-Speak and many others. In US there are so many good designs well under $300 price tag.

I believe there can be an alternative option, which will sound just as good.

The aim is to make 2 way towers that can archive 35 Hz.

Anyone up for a challenge to make budget speakers during the economy slowdown?

I'm in Melbourne.

It would be good if someone can actually build, as drivers not that expensive, the main design of the box, probably similar to what Paul Carmody is referencing, from his Amiga design.

If we make such speakers with Jaycar's HiVi drivers sounding just as good as their famous JV60 set at half price or even less. I bet it would be number one DIY speaker set in Australia!!!

Can use tweeters from Jaycar or elsewhere. Jaycars would be better, in that way it is easy to get for anyone in Australia.
It would be good to use ribbon as it reproduces very human voice in the most natural way.

The best price I could find Aurum G2i for $60:

i think that is why in Australia there is no any reasonable budget speaker designs, as no one wants to share with the community. Even if someone does reasonable project, it becomes all about up selling.

This project is not for me... It will be for anyone in Australia to build speakers for under $250 that will sound just as good. Paul Carmody proved that it can be archived, I believe we can do similar in Australia.

Anyone can try these drivers, you can return them back to Jaycar within 7 days, as long as they are in the same condition.

Cheap does mean it is bad, with reference from parts express, most successful projects been archived with drivers costing $35. How come we don't have something similar here in Oz...

It would be good that woofers and tweeters come from Jaycar, can maybe even use their Vifa D25AG. It would become easy for everyone to access/buy, as they have many store outlets across Australia.

And I made a pair of these for around $550
See this thread for the details http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/multi-way/110583-fast-fun-inexpensive-ob-project.html

Drivers were readily available from Essential Audio in Melbourne. I think it was $110 ea for the woofer and $25 ea for the full range about 12 months ago.
The only down side was need to make my own air-cored 20mH crossover inductors because commercial versions were either far too expensive or rubbish. I had to build my own coil winder and buy a huge roll of 2mm winding wire. Very much worth the effort though.

(I still have 40kg of wire left so get in contact with me if you want some good quality air cored inductors)

Unfortunately in this case cheap does equal bad. Back in the 90s JC did some reasonable budget kits (still costing more than your current budget), but the driver quality was much higher.

Not long ago I looked at some of their Vifa drivers and driver stock today is like chalk and cheese. The cones were off centre and they generally looked like crap. I did a quick listen and the sound matched the look.

Which units are you talking about?

Hi Eugene. The 6.5inch Response is a good woofer, as is it bigger brother. Both have phenomenal bass out put, and if you have a good crossover is and excellent performer.

I use the 8 & 6.5 in a lot of builds and they perform as well as much higher priced speakers. I also use the Kevlar range from Surplustronics as well. I use all three of the Kevlar depending upon build.

My latest version of the Pettites uses the 6.5 inch Kevlar coupled with the CT2007 Jaycar titanium tweeter. For a 12.5 litre 2 way they are really good performers and have an impressive sound-stage & resolution.

The tweeter is a Vifa OEM clone and the Response woofers are a Peerless OEM unit made in India. I know because I got Jaycar to find out for me.

I also have all the T&S parameters and performance graphs for these speakers so I you need any info just PM me or email.

Heres some of my builds using these drivers

Current build is a set of PMS speakers using a Response 8 inch Driver & Tweeter and a 6.5 in Kevlar for the mid.

Aria2
The Aria 2's a two way hi-fi speaker

Hope all this of some use.

Ralph!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!!!

Your are the man I'm been praying for., I can't believe I found you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well there you go, especially to all who could not believe that these drivers can be even used....

It is great to know that you were able to use these drives... with good results.

I can see you are active on parts express and you know some designs by Paul Carmody. He is extremely good. his overnight sensation speakers are number one seller on parts express, they are always out stock!!!

I really love his designs., and I just thought that maybe something similar we can archive in Australia. It is more challenging as here in Oz & NZ it is a different world all together.

I though that we can reproduce similar outcome as Paul did with his ZX Spectrum or Amiga. To me Jaycar Response drivers looked almost identical to HiVi drivers, they have same specs and look a like.

Just now I took a closer look and could not find anywhere written that's it is made in China, then probably you are right, they are from India.

The original Idea was to use Paul's Amiga 30 liter design for the speaker, as it looks very neat and it is already there for anyone to use.

He used 6" driver, for a bookshelf design and able to get 42 Hz and with 30 liter box all the way to 34 Hz.

--
"The overall cabinet volume is 30 Liters and the vent is 2" in diameter, and 3.5" long. This tunes the box to 39 Hz, and provides an F3 of a very satisfying 34 Hz".
--

I believe that this drivers are capable to perform in the same fashion... maybe I wrong.

What do you think yourself is it the driver limitation or the crossover problem?

I looked at your projects, and I can see that you were able to get around 40 Hz in a 30 liter box with 8" Response driver.

Can we adopt Paul's ZX Spectrum crossover to improve Jaycar driver performance?

Designs by Gainphile (Pluto) and John are certainly nice concepts and great implementation. I guess I just been looking more for conventional 30 liter designs. The budget can go to $300 as long as it is really that good.

I looked at theloudspeakerkit.com I can see that they have extended their range with Dayton series drivers, the variety is not as parts express, but i can see their trying their best.

I see they carry the Dayton RS180-8 driver, that been used for Amiga set up, but then they don't have Vifa DX25TG09-04, so it needs to be purchased elsewhere, means again that we are back to Parts Express...

3 way is a nice concept, but the price would go up as well, I think that is why Paul Carmody designed 2 way with 30 liters box, that behave just like 3 way in order to stay within a budget. That is why we better stick to his original concept in order to archive something similar...

Now reading through again., kiwilistener archived 35 Hz with 8" driver in 31 liters., is there way we can do the same with 6.5"???
