AUNE - MINI USB DAC/Headphone amp

Aune has finally made it onto DIYAUDIO NICE~ I've had this little DAC for over a year now and did just about everything you guys are doing ie: custom power supply, new opamps and better caps etc.... In my opinion this DAC is pretty good and even sounds better then some decent cd players!

That being said, I just built the Peter Daniel's NOS DAC and it blows this thing out of the water so badly its not even funny. After hearing this new DAC the AUNE will never see serious music listening duty again. Maybe as a sound card!

I really liked the AUNE but it's not on the same planet as the PD DAC. If you really want to take it to the next level build it and be amazed!

Aune with mods is about the same money as the PD DAC BTW😉

Thanks!

i agree it's not a true "audiophile" DAC... even over USB, which is better than the SPDIF input, it is not even remotely close in fidelity to my modified CD players (Onkyo DX-7555, Sony SCD-C222ES), which in fairness are pretty good (they've compared favorably to high-end players costing up to $4k). i'm also spoiled by the Monarchy Audio tube DAC i am currently reviewing, which is truly state-of-the-art... i can't overstate what an amazing-sounding unit that is. but for PC listening, a big improvement over most sound cards/built-in audio, even on my Macs which are pretty decent by computer standards.

anyway after a quick, sobering comparison with the "real" gear - it took all of 30 seconds listening to Mozart wind serenades to realize the shortcomings - i've decided not to bother doing too much more with the Muse/Aune. after my light mods it's pleasant enough as it is, euphonic and non-fatiguing with MP3's.

I completely agree! I didn't want people to think I was bashing it, I merely wanted to point out that there is much better equipment available for almost the same money.
I'm almost done building my DAC-ASH a Quanghao project using a tube output stage... Can't wait to see how that will compare against the other two🙂

I just can't comment on the Peter Daniel's NOS DAC because I don't have chance listen to it. I understand it is based on CS8412 and TDA1543 chips.

In fact, I have just tried the Crystal evaluationa boards. One with CS8412 and CS8490 and the other one with CS8414 and CS43122. They sound marvelous indeed.

It is hard to say which one is better. Each DAC has their own sound character. It is up to us to judge which one is your cup of tea.
