audiobahn plate or 2way?

Plate speakers, being say, 5.25" and a tweet with a well-built cross over is always better than a coaxial speaker.

You see, with the "plate" speaker you have more room for the filter network. Now, what's typical with coaxial speakers is that the company throws a single (cheap) electrolytic cap and maybe a resistor (also cheap) in front of the tweeter. For any care for sound quality this fails miserably.

I don't like to separate SPL and SQ for many hypothetical reasons of mine, but if one were not to care about SQ and simply care about SPL (overall and not just low frequencies) then the coaxial network would still fail. Why? Simple, the single cap, has a first order response (6dB./octave) unless the tweeter is extremely robust then this is fine.

You can always put together your own plate, I do it all the time to replace 6x9s, 4x6, etc. I'll scrounge some pics up if ya' want. Anyway, hope this helps.
