Weird in that circuit that the servo stage uses TL072 rather than LM4562, seems like a way to destroy the noise and distortion performance for little benefit - isn't the input offset voltage of the TL072 poor compared to the LM4562 anyway, defeating its purpose entirely?

Servo should be heavily filtered. Usually TL072 can work okay since its just sitting there pretty much at one output voltage. There is better, however.
I find most CD players will drive many power amps as loud as you'd want, so all you need is a pot!
