Hello ! I've built a DIY Audio Note Kit 1:
Amplificador a triodos 300B Single Ended
I have no HUM (this is good) but I'm not fully satisfied with the results. The sound is clear and detailed but a little bright. I've change the JJ for the EML 300b (much better tubes) and i bought a RCA 6sn7, but the sound is still a little bright.
I have two options:
_ Re-build the amp with another schematic (I don't know which, if JELABS, etc...)
_ Follow the Audio Note kit1 modification of DIYPARADISO:
Upgrade Audionot kit 1
with two 5670 instead one 6sn7 and two 5687.
What do you think?
Someone has tried this schematic?
Thank you very much

What speakers are you using? A friend here has JE Labs 300b clone amps with AN-E's, and they are definitely not bright sounding.

Hi Jeff, my speakers are DIY Open Baffle with a ribbon tweeter (Fountek Neo cd2), Supravox 215s and eminence woofer.
I'm sure the speakers are not bright

Pre tubes in K1 are good choice. /In my SE 300B I use pre E180F Phillips and plate current 300B is 90 ma/. You can disconnect two caps 0.47uF from cathode 300B and cap 0.47 from pretube /paralleling caps with different media is bad choice/. Put electrol. caps Black gate, Elna Cerafine or Nichicon in both cathodes.

Sounds like an interesting setup. Maybe "bright" isn't the correct terminology, forward in the mid treble region 5-7kHz? How do the speakers sound with a different amplifier?

My speakers sound ok with the Audio Research Vsi-55 I had some time ago. The speakers are not the problem, I'm sure.
My coupling capacitors are Audio Note and my decoupling capacitors are Nichicon Muse.

Another possibility, what you have now is correct......but you have been listening to something for so long that was lacking that this new one is only what you think is "too bright"
It's possible, but my audiophiles friends also think that the sound is not very good because it's a little bright

Try adding some gNFB to take the edge off. Contrary to audiophool folk "wisdom", gNFB isn't the SpawnOfSatan(tm) and does help with cutting down the excessive H3 and higher order harmonics that make for an "edgy" sound.
That worked for me just last week! I had a PP 6P14P triode connected that was a little "tizzy" with a propensity towards sibilance on female vocals and -4.4db of feedback cured the tendency completely without affecting the dynamics.Try adding some gNFB to take the edge off.
Hi Palustrus, I have a similar issue with my audionote and hope to res this thread. Could you post info on how you implimented the gnfb? THANKS! Henry

That was five years ago: I'm not even certain which PP 6P14P amp I was referring to. I have never had an Audio Note amp. So post the schematic and maybe we can devise a gNFB network.
Hi Henry, someone might be able to design a gNFB path for your amp but the SRPP driver stage makes that difficult and tricky to implement (at least for me) since the feedback must be introduced at the grid of the SRPP. If you have a problem with sibilance, feedback is not necessarily the answer. Have you tried different brands of tubes or coupling capacitors? Have any modifications been made? Has it always had the sibilance or was something changed?
If you have access to the speaker cross over, it is easier to mod there than inside the amp with so so results.
A small investment of a measurement microphone will show you where the brightness is. Playing each frequency until you find the irritation + confirm findings with microphone.

Hi, thanks for the advice. I agree that the speaker crossover is an easy place to make a difference. Cheers!
Hi Henry, and I forgot to mention it could be an impedance problem which the other amp wasn't sensitive too. Speakers with difficult impedance curves can become mid-rangy when paired with SET amps.
