Audio L/R/signal gets lost somewhere in our PA system!

Hi all,

I hope this is the correct sub-forum.

I'm going to try to simplify this problem as much as possible to try and make it understandable 🙂

We have an aux cable (your standard 3.5mm) - which plugs into an aux -> RCA cable:

The RCA connection then plugs into our TOA 2120 amplifier via the RCA inputs on the back.

When we play a specific video through our system, the sound comes through just fine - we can hear all aspects of the video.

It's worth noting the video is split into 2 main parts - the intro music, and then the rest of the video is a guy talking.

The problem happens when we take off the aux -> RCA cable, and replace it with an aux -> stereo jack (similar to this, but ours is a wire). When we plug this cable into our MIXER using the stereo jack connector (Behringer X AIR XR12 mixer) rather than our amplifier, when we monitor the mixer channels, we can see that during the intro section of the video, we are getting audio going through the channel, but when the person starts to talk in the video, there is no longer a signal going through the channel - whereas we can hear the audio perfectly fine when it's plugged into the amplifier using an RCA connector.

My theories so far are the following:
- The stereo jack connector is somehow blocking either L/R from the aux cable - since if we can't see any input coming into the mixer through the stereo jack during this specific part of the video, but we know that the aux DOES work, then it must be the stereo jack thats causing an issue. The reason I think it's blocking either Left or Right audio is because it's the only way that I can rationalise the fact that the intro music in the video plays just fine. Although listening to the video through a normal pair of headphones, I can hear the audio coming through each earphone.
-The mixer is doing something funny with the stereo jack input, and cancelling the input, but not reporting the stereo jack input audio either.

Either way, there is something weird going on with the video that we are using. We've had this problem before with an older video, where the audio is slightly muted and washed out (the audio was about half of the volume of what it should've been) - so I assume it's something to do with the way the company records their videos (since both of these are company videos). I just want to be able to play these videos the same through the mixer as they do through the amplifier - and any pointers as to whether it's the connector, or the mixer itself, or how I narrow-down the issue would be extremely helpful.

Any questions please ask! 🙂
PS - go easy I'm a newbie!

This is to do with the difference between stereo unbalanced and mono balanced connections.
With an adapter as in your link, you're putting both sides of the stereo signal into one mono input, which is why they're being cancelled out.
Use an adapter like: Google search to put the signal into two of the jack inputs on the X-air and the problem should disappear.

Oh thats awesome thanks! I did a bit of reading on balanced and unbalanced before but it meant nothing to me so thanks for explaining it! I'll buy one of those cables and if you hear nothing back, assume that it's fixed.

Thanks a lot!
