Would someone please explain to me why I hear better audio detail from my Samsung tv speakers or my computer speakers than I do from my mighty HPM 100s...?
Same source- streaming or CD...Different receivers...Denon 4802, Yamaha V3000...same result. Not sure what might be the frequency of drumsticks clicking to set the beat at the beginning of a tune but I can't hear them on the HPMs...WTH??

Yep...obviously the samsung TV speakers don't have the body or fullness of a floor speaker...but the detail is there. Interesting because when i bought these in 1977 I, and everyone else who listened to them was amazed at their clarity and detail when paired with my sansui 9090. I guess time changes all things except what we choose to recall.
Are you sure the detail is supposed to be there or could your TV be exaggerating the frequency response in certain areas. When you play speakers with all the bass and other parts of the spectrum it can make some details less quiet but that's just how it's supposed to be.
Also I guess the crossover components could be degraded if they're over 40 years old, even the drivers surely could be past their best

Didn't keep the sansui??? You can bet I kept it...along with the RT1011 reel to reel, the SG9800 EQ, PL530TT, the PL112 turntable, the pioneer tuner...all purchased way back when. I try to save it all....and have been trying other receivers through the years to find something I like as well. Denon. Yamaha. Onkyo. Pioneer. The 9090, the HPMs and other equipment of the were designed when vinyl was the only option. Videotape, CDs, DVDs, streaming did not exist.
Say what you might, in their elements, this equipment will blow you away. But getting a little long in the tooth. that's why I'm asking questions...thanks.

i'm a fan of old gear but yes, fixing the things that are problematic, like a ragged response can cure problems.
i could be wrong but i'd say that with something like a "drum stick click count in" that it's very much clean transients which can be readily obscured or phased out of existence by a funky response.
