Before discarding the laser -
Does it play the CD correctly once it is recognised?
Does it play CDRs?
If yes to both - the laser might still be Ok.

I don't know much about this CD Player.....but if it is a bit old....like 10 years or so.......a little bit of servicing can work wonders.

First - try cleaning the laser lense carefully.

Second - inspect the mechanism and clamp that holds the CD in place. it might be worn or just need a lube.

Third - replace all electrolytic caps in the power supply and mechanism.

Oh - and don't forget to search for answers......
Some answers

This is a most common problem concerned with CD drives. And this mostly occur due to allignment problem. The optical eye are alligned so precisely with a couple of strands. When they are improperly alligned out of some reason (bad cd reading) this takes place. There is no way in alligning them back properly, except replacing the lens system. If the laser diode is also damaged similar problem can arise. Check in the dark, it a red glow appears at the lens, while the tray is being inserted without a cd.Some times dust can also cause this problem. You can clean them using cleanable CDs.

Fin,yes when it identifies the disc,it plays them ok.

Don't rush into replacing the laser. Do the other stuff first....it's easier and cheaper...and less risky. If it turns out that it is the laser that is at fault....it will be good to have all of the other stuff done anyway...to ensure that the new laser is in a good opperating environment.
