The Rob Robinette reverse arrangement is actually about as good as you can do with two parts. The thing is, to get a good tone on a guitar amp attenuator you have to control both the output impedance and the input impedance. The input impedance needs to load the amp correctly, say 8ohm or whatever, but the output impedance needs to stay fairly high or else the speaker will be too damped. This is a key factor in tube guitar amps. It lets the inductance of the speaker cause the treble to rise.
