I have a pioneer PDR-05 cd recorder. It is a fairly old model but was a good burner (it is an elite unit). I got this from my dad for free so spending a little cash on it is no big deal.
The symptom is that it will not recognize discs of any type. It does not even spin them. This started after it sat for a few years without any use. It was turned on though, but when I put a disc in it would not read it.
I have taken it apart, and checked out the laser assembly. The slide motor for the eye, and the focus are working. I can see the eye move back and fourth and in and out.
On the back of the top of the spindle (where the hub of the motor is that spins the disc) there is a strobe pattern with an eye of some sort. I assume this is motor speed control. The board says 5v and ground and signal. 5v is present.
I put a meter on the back of the spindle motor and did not see any change when it should have been spinning the disc. It sat at .60v and never moved.
What tells the disc player when to spin? Is it the eye focusing? Or should it automatically spin whenever the drawer is closed. Typically enough, i never paid attention when it worked!
Any thoughts or ideas?? Is there any diagnostic mode on this?

did you try to clean the lens?
if its a burner it would have two lasers one to read one to burn.
you can adjust the lasers on the side of the LASER UNIT.
my guese would be to just get the model number off the part
and order a new LASER UNIT. most of the time thats all it is
or the spindal motor.
i have never had a look at this model so i have no idea what the parts are. pics would help

Spindal motor is 23 bucks, pickup unit is 331!
If the pickup is bad, its not worth fixing. I am attaching photos of it.
There is only one lense, so am I thinking correctly that the silver boxes on either side of the lense are the lasers? How do I clean this thing? Compressed air??

some do some dont. remove the pcb or wires from the spindal motor and apply 5v or 3v whatever the motor is and see if it spins sometimes the brushes inside the motor wear out.
or spin it with your finger if you can hear it click or pop it toast
thats if its not a brushless motor.
just to be sure thats not the problem. if its good your looking at the laser assembly or a part on the mainboard.

Okay Ill try applying voltage to see whats happening.
I do suspect another part as being the culprit because it got hardly any use (so I would think unlikely bad brushes).

I have an old pioneerp-dx500 cd player that has a simular problem,it will not read the T.O.C. it does not even spin up,I believe the problem lies in that it is not acheaving focus lock,which it has to before it can spin up,this could be due to a number of things from faulty laser to dry joints( if it is fairly old) or a chip or component gone down,you really need a circuit daiagram,but cd players can be hard to diagnose,if its a really good one it maybe worth getting it profesonally looked at before delving in,its easy to make things even worse than they already are,Iv'e done it enough times myself

Basically, I like this burner but if I destroy it while tinkering who cares. LOL.
Its not really worth taking to a tech, but im always one to poke around in equipment. I have a sansui integrated in the living room and the cd player in the kitchen (yes im single!).
I tested the motor with a battery and it is good.
Seems like the lense is able to move in and out for focus, but obviously you may be right on with the lock. Sounds like the exact symptoms you had. Dried out is a very real possibility. This unit did sit with very little use for along time. It is about 10 years old!! It broke after about 6 years, its been in the closet and I figured id give it a tinker!
