My Asus Xonar Essence ST sound card has recently stopped putting out stereo sound. All sounds, including music, are reproduced in mono in both channels of the headphone output (the Xonar ST has its own headphone amplifier). I currently do not use the 2 channel speaker output.
For example, when I use the Xonar software speaker tester, a voice alternately says "Left" and "Right" to confirm that each channel is functional, but each spoken phrase is heard in both left and right channels. The same result is obtained when I use the Windows audio device tester: the bell tones for left and right are both heard in both channels. I have confirmed that it is a hardware, not a software, problem.
As I said previously, this is a recent problem that I have never before encountered. I never noticed any other symptoms. The card simply went all mono one day. I like this card and would rather repair it than replace it. Should I simply start replacing the integrated circuits on the board, or might there be another solution? Any help would be appreciated.

Did you try several headphones? Perhaps the cable has the L/R cores shorted?
