Are you satisfied with your own speaker design build?

"It Depends"
My last few builds were highly successful. Excellent results, the latest ( Seas based) I would put against most OEM's in the size range. Satisfied? Heck no. I know there are things left on the table. I am planning the next build. Never stop learning.

Hi fakeout

I'm happy with my own cabinet design PHL & Raven based and I hope to hear them by the end of the year 🙂 ,the project has only been going 5 + years 😀 .

The only problem I find with building your own design is logging onto forums and reading other's projects and thinking Hmmmmm that's a great project and changing your design half way through .

Cheers

Mal

Very satisfied indeed 🙂 But can always be improved, and I'm never without a few improvement ideas up my sleeve to be tried out in the next iteration. Compares favourably with just about anything I've tried to throw at it, both in measurements and listening. Things like Bowers&Wilkins 802D, Magico V3 and Linn Klimax 350A. At least on qualities I value the most.

I don't know where to put this question so I'm putting it in my own thread, but out of curiosity, does anyone think it would be realistic to make a small 3-way with 5-1/4" subwoofers like the Tang Band W5-1138SM?[/url]

Small cone area cannot create low enough bass. Common trick has compromise in sensitivity. Even big woofers are insensitive that many come up with 2-1/2 way system.

Realistic or not I think it depends on implementation, cost, size restriction and of course actual driver spec. My intuition is that a suitable implementation is for mini subwoofer a-la computer speaker system where small size is a requirement. Other than that, I don't think I will want one.

To make a first response to the first question : Yes I am happy with my own build. But it comes at a price with a little quality of driver and design.
And the second response for the second question, frankly forget Tangbang go to more serious brands. If you want small and good, have bass, try this :
Zaph|Audio - ZD5 - Scan Speak 15W8530K00 and Vifa XT25
Ellam-XT
or this with 2x5" Ellam d'
You should not be disappointed...

Or this...
Introducing the "INTIMATES" (high WAF & quality sound)

Very similar SS bass/mid in a very attractive 15L vented cabinet with bass down to 40 hz before roll off. Not chest thumping bass, but very true to life, listenable bass.

Not satisfied...

Maybe I will try some room treatments....

"It has been remarked that if one selects his own components, builds his own enclosure, and is convinced he has made a wise choice of design, then his own loudspeaker sounds better to him than does anyone else's loudspeaker. In this case, the frequency response of the loudspeaker seems to play only a minor part in forming a person's opinion."

- L.L. Beranek

I'd agree with this but in my case it was only at the beginning. The longer I live with my speakers, the more I pick faults in them. I tweak the crossover to try to fix the faults (taking measurements along the way). When i'm happy that i've fixed the faults, I live with my speakers again until I find more faults and the process goes like that until I can't really make them sound any better.
I'm over the moon with my build and would happily compare them to anything of a similar size. I will be comparing them to some commercial speakers in a week or two and will report back in my build thread whatever the outcome
