I have a pile of amplifiers that use the 2SJ56 and 2SK176 TO3 outputs. I personally don’t know if there is anything wrong with any of them, but after opening one of the amps it seems that those are the only parts that might be tricky to replace. Is there a mosfet in to TO3P package and any other package that might work if I’m needed to replace some? I really hope I don’t have a huge stack of paper weights. They are Hafler Pro5000 amplifiers for those that want to know.

I saw that Sound Smith was asking $63 for each mosfet!!! I can’t imagine there are selling many at that price. It would cost me over $750 to put now outputs in one of these amps.

ECF10N20 / ECF10P20 are candidates if available.

Are those available in the US anywhere? A quick search and I didn’t see any vendors. Thank you for the reply.

I didn't search for them but I'm afraid you'll have to find NOS of J56 / K176 or the Exicons. Don't buy NTE or Chinese parts.
These old J56 / K176 were very robust. I have no experience with the Hafler amps but anytime TO3 equipped pro amps came in, I tightened the screws of all outputs transistors. Cleaning the amps is also never a bad idea.

You can buy them from Profusionplc:

edit: EOL, so grab it while it`s still there.

Erm, end of life was actually yesterday... Need to track down a stockist who still has some. Someone needs to design a clever mounting adapter to allow TO247's to be used on a TO3 heatsink perhaps?
