Are 50mW pots enough for most audio applications?

I'm trying to build up a collection of parts so I can finally start learning about and designing my own amps, filters, etc.

I was thinking 1K, 10K, 50K, 100K would be good values.

Mouser has some really cheap Bourns pots that are $0.67/ea, which is tempting, but I'm wondering if 50mW (what they are rated for), is too little for most applications.

Is it better to spend a little more for 1/4W pots for prototyping? Any ideas?

Thanks.

Just figure out the power... But, for most applications I'd say 50mW is enough.

Beware: Sometimes there's a reason why things are cheap. My guess is that these a adjust once and forget types of pots.

No they are not trimmer pots. They're rated for 10,000 mechanical cycles. That's pretty good.

Well yes I think for most things 50mW is probably okay, but I haven't done too much design on my own, so maybe there's something I don't know.

You'll probably just be fine. Just calculate the power dissipated in your circuit. It's the square of the voltage across the pot divided by its resistance and make sure it's nowhere near 50mW. Personally I'd go with a 5x margin of safety for a small trimmer.
