Since I could not find anything I liked already on sale, I decided to play with Arduino Nano for the first time and build everything I wanted to have for proper amp control. I was surprised how much functionality and fun I could get from ~10 eur worth of parts (with shipping!).
Features:
1) IR remote channel switching and power on/off
2) tactile panel buttons power and channel switching
3) 16x2 display for input, temp and power states
4) Temp sensing and auto shut off
5) Soft start
Now, I just need some suggestions for volume control. Motorized pot or something better? Array of relays with high quality resistors maybe?

I stumbled upon this very interesting article:

And Ldr really seems like a way to go! I am planning to have nothing on the front panel but an oled window, with volume, power and input control done by IR remote, and possibly even over wifi.
