Arcam D250 CDM9 TOC Issue?

Hi Everyone,

I was hoping for some pointers with this problem that occurred when I was using the D250 transport to burn in a new headphone amp. I think I may have pressed two buttons at once on the front panel, but the player stopped reading the TOC when I went to restart it. Probably just coincidence. I've had the player in Service Mode and it seems I have an Error 03 which is a radial error.

The D250 Service Manual is pretty vague, but the A5/6 manual has more details about getting the player into test mode.

Having seem some of the previous problems people have had here, I tried out some of the suggestions. I put some DC directly to the spindle motor and it spun up fine. I tested the motor socket on the pcb underneath the CDM and there was a very quick transient 2VDC and then it disappeared.

I read that if the TOC isn't read properly that the spindle motor will not start at all. I also read that a certain cap can fail and that causes similar problems.

Any pointers please, or a link to an English version of the CDM9 would be most welcome.

Finally, I did clean the lens with some non-alcohol cleaner.

CDM9 is a funny mech, it achieves focus on the disc, then spins up to read toc, most spin and then focus. Without focus no spin. Not knowing the sequence i suspected a dud spindle motor on mine, turned out to be a worn laser....


However, do also check that the plastic platter has not moved down on the spindle motor shaft and is rubbing on the "laser block body" as this I have seen too on CDM9/44 and once on a pro...
 
Update - Radial Error

I checked the platter/deck clearance and all seems well. In Service Mode 0, the arm swings as it should. In Service Mode 1, I can make out the Laser shining through the lens (didn't look at it directly, so can't tell if it was "bright" or not!! :angel: ), and the lens moves up and down as it's focussing. In Service Mode 2 (Radial and Turntable test), there is no turntable action at all, but the motor did run fine when DC was applied to the power connector directly.

As the fault was intermittent, I suspect a Radial Error, and that was backed up by Error Code 03.

Not quite sure where to go from here, but will check the schema for the radial control part of the circuit.

I might also change the electrolytic caps on the CDM motor board and see what the results are. Might take a few days if I haven't got the exact values in stock, but I wouldn't want to bung different capacitance values in there in case it throws a proberbial spanner in the works. :whazzat:

How much is a few Euro?
I mostly have taken cdm9/44 to refurb pro mechs. Being the compulsive horder, i am sure I have more then one "plate" sans swing arm with motor. No idea what it would cost to post but if you pm me your postall adress I will see if I can not mail you one incl "platter". (From South Africa). This in theory should be a spanking new motor.

Thanks for your kind offer! A few Euros is 4 plus postage. Apparantly, the 9/44 and 9/65 have compatible lasers (according to Tobias), but he doesn't know about the motor. I'll post a pic of the motor later on. One more test I need to run is current supplied to the motor on start up. Either there isn't enough juice going to the motor to get it spinning up, or the motor has been worn out and weakened by me using it to burn in a headphone amp a few months ago (for around a week, 24/7.... doh!).
