Hi there. As the title suggests, my Arcam CD72 has stopped playing some CD-Rs. It was playing them fine until today...now when i put them in, its like the player isnt picking the discs up. Its not all Cd-r that it doesnt recognise. I took it apart and gave the laser lens a wee wash with cleaning fluid and a cotton bud, hoping that would do the trick, but had no joy!
Anyone got a clue as to what may be the problem? Any help gratefully received!

If it's not recognizing some of them it's probably a weak laser. I think that has a Sony 213C laser, really inexpensive and easy to replace.
thanx for your reply Bill. It was playing CD-R no problem, until two days ago. it wasnt even a case of a slow deteriation, just happened overnight without warning.

Well, I know that there are no adjustments that can be made. Another cause could be the tracking mechanism but if commercial CDs play correctly I would assume it to be the strength of the beam reflecting off of the CDRs vs the commercial ones. They have slightly different characteristics. You might try to clean a CDR that is problematic with lense cleaner, if it improves then it is almost certain the laser is at fault. Without a scope and a little practice there is no way to reach any other conclusion. The entire mechanism can be purchased for $20 US and it is not a difficult process to replace it. In my Rotel the only thing to be careful about is getting the suspension springs back in their correct location as the four springs are not identical. Pay close attention when you disassemble it, and make a drawing to place the unit on, keeping your parts sorted on the drawing.

Well, it's mostly mechanical with one little solder blob to remove, and one ribbon cable to remove and reinstall along with whatever cabling you need to disconnect to remove the assembly from the player. Just a little mechanical ability and soldering skills with close attention to detail.
Limited knowlege - no, there is intricate disassembly of the laser from the sled to be done, and the laser module is very static sensitive. I would recommend you entrust this to a specialist.

There is no intricate assembly to deal with, the entire assembly is replaced on a KSS213.
