I am looking for a cd player that has a mechanism i can get new,
arcam aplha cd7se
The DAC Lampizator described as being one of the best, though i wonder ? PCM1702/4? players maybe or TDA1541 with the CD723 Philips?
The DAC chip is a burr-Brown PCM1716 whic is quite rare and in theory it is one of the worst DACS from Burr-Brown ever, but in reality - it is one of the best.
It is a well kept secret that B-B PCM1716 has excellent sound, so appealing, that many people consider it their DAC chip of choice.
Sadly I did not have more than half day for testing but I agree that this sound is equal to the best ones.
I would say that this DAC chip beats their own high end PCM1702 which is a real BLASPHEMY in High-end circles.
A similarily lively, energetic, enjoyable sound comes for example from the Philips TDA1549.

I have owned both players , sound quality - the Arcam was soft slow and lacked detail the Philips was superb being musical and involving . There's something " magical " about those early Philips dacs that even today take some beating.
Personally i would take a Philips dac over a Burr Brown any day .

Thanks Konzentr8 🙂 Its great you had both of these players. I will find some TDA1541A players that I can still get brand new lasers for.
I don't know how much luck you would have in sourcing genuine NOS lasers etc. There are plenty of replacements available but the quality of lasers is nothing like it was back then.
I had a conversation awhile back with a guy that works for a well known uk Hi-Fi company and he said the biggest issue they have with cd players now is finding good quality lasers , laser failure being the main reason that players come in for repair and even on high end gear it's the weakest link.
When you look around at the second hand market it makes sense , theres tons of 80's early 90's players out there in original working order. I've bought players 20-25 years old that just keep playing but newer stuff over ten years old more often than not have some sort of issue and when it comes to fixing theres no parts cos they are obselete , like your sig says the 80 's were definitely " rad " .

There ya go Macc even with the cost of carriage to Oz definitely worth investigating and i agree with bill in regards to Lampy , man on a single minded mission ie if it don't glow it's inferior .
From his website " installing the lampizator alone with no other mods turns any high street cd player into a high end giant killer " now where have i heard that type of hype before ? ... 🙂

Hi Konzentr8 🙂
Yes, i have 5 spare old school CDM19 lasers in boxes from players I messed up or found on the cheap. Any players with that mech, i would be looking at.
As for newer lasers KSS-150A I can get at a electronics chain here in Australia, and yes quality like anything new, may not be like the old. I was considering a TDA1541A NEC player with the KSS-150A
Hi Bill and Konzentr8, yes cant believe everything Lampy says i guess. Bill the CD80 would be a heavy old beast 😀
