Appropriate speakers for a specific room

Hi all,

Over the last months I spent a lot of time surfing and reading about possible speakers design that I could build to replace the B&W P4 (little floorstanding TL speakers) I use in my main system. I made a very interesting list of monitor and floorstanding DIY speakers. When making my final choice, I want to take in account all the important parameters. One of them is my listening room dimensions. My listening room is only 13” x 14”. It is not completely square, as it have a kinda “L” shape. As you may expect, I do near field listening.

My question is not which specific design I should use, it is :
“What kind of speakers are more appropriate to be use in a small room ?”
“Floor standing that will reproduce the full range (let say 35 Hz to 20 kHz) or monitor + a good sealed subwoofer ?”

I was told that using a sub have a big advantage as it don’t introduce the bass cancellation problem.

I actually use a B&W subwoofer (ASW-1000) to give more buddy to the low frequencies. Most of the time the integration is very good, but I feel that sometime the bass of the speakers is to fast for the sub + sometime the position of the bass into the musical image change when the bass go down.

Any input would be welcome !

Best regards,

Daniel
