I have a pair of alpha Minis and a Alpha Midi CC, (same speaker as the Minis) and I was wondering if there was anything I could do to improve the sound of them. They;re a great little speaker, but I would love to tweek them to improve thier performance. any suggestions?
Yes there is
I changed the caps in the crossover which were electrolytic (10uf) for Solen caps.
Sweatened things up a bit.
I made good stands and cut some marble to place on top of the speaker in order to reduce vibrations of the box.

So you used a 10uf Solen cap? Figures since all I have are some 3.3 and 2.5's. Parts Express is gonna love me. LOL
I replaced the electrolytic cap with a polypropelene one of the SAME value. Make sure you do the same.... or else your change much more than you bargained for.
ENJOY!
ENJOY!
I know. I just wanted to make sure you meant 10uf and not 1.0 or something. That cap is so small compared to a poly Solen. Just wanted to make sure since I was unable to find the value on the x-over's cap.
I'm actually toying with the idea of replacing the cabinets while I'm at it. They're about 7 years old and have gone though 5 moves are a little banged up. PE has the .25 cubic ft cabs in beech that apear to be really nice for $110 and it would be a nice way to feel like I have new speakers even if I dont. LOL

You might consider making the Proac 2.5 clone.
Do a little search on this sight and you'll find tons of info,
it is well wurth the extra trouble and money.
The cap value was written on my cap.
Good luck.

I have some little PSBs, alphas i think. I redid the front baffle, and ductsealed the bass driver (a very important mod on almost any driver) -- then they went off to a friends and never came back for more.

Cool, thanks for everyones help. In keeping with a low buget (since I'm working on a couple gainclones, and now toying with the idea of a Aleph5, I'll probably just replace the cabinets with the PE ones for now, then once I get everything done, tackle somthing like the ProAcs, (which a have heard and LOVE)
Mod PSB Alpha Minis.
I would change the caps as well and if I recall right the crossover is mounted on a board. If so I would rebuild everything and get rid of the board. Wire the crossover direct and line the inner walls with acoustic damping sheets (huge improvement). If you plan on making a cabinet for it then I would use .75 MDF and make the front baffle 1” think. This will be 10X better than the PSB cabinet. Also PSB used to use lots of extra internal wiring and cheap wiring at that. I would replace the 16ga wire with something better and nothing less than 14ga. I did all this do a pair of PSB 600s and it was a HUGE improvement in sound.
Good luck.
