I need some help, my 7" Lilliput projector project is coming on fine, however I am stuck, I can not find a place online here in Europe or a firm that will ship that sells FCC cables as I need a longer cable than the one that factory installed in the Lilliput screen.
Here are the essential specs:
Length: ideally longer than 30cm (12 inch)
Pitch: 0.5 mm
Number of cores: 40
Any one have any ideas?

yeah in europe it's abit tricky to get this.

RS electronics sell both the cables and the sockets in the UK.

However they only sell the cables in multiples of 5 and the sockets in multiples of 10 if I remmeber correctly - might actually be 10 and 20. I need one too I think (need to check measurements on my monitor's FFC cable - Fujitsu P15-1). I may buy a batch from RS and sell the rest on if anyones interested?

David, alas they don't have the cable I need, I need one that is 40 way (that is what the Lilliput XGA uses to connect the main board to the tft controler, other people who have used Lilliput monitors in projectors must have come across the same problem as me), anyone out there who knows where to get 40 way FFC cables from????

They have them in 3" or 6". To make a longer extension you can buy the 40 pin ZIF socket on that same page and put two cables in the socket before closing it.
If they give you a hard time about shipping to EU, let me know. I have envelopes!
On the other hand, if you would need an extension longer than 12", maybe you need to rethink your design. These are very high speed signals. Your LCD may not even work if you make the FFC too long.

Guy thanks for the info, I got a cable from mouser.com, not that i think I will bother finishing my project, anyone want a lilliput lol? as plasma screens can now be had for less than £1000 GBP if ya know the right place to go. Some of them are massive (65" plus and apparantly Sharp plans even bigger ones!) so i think the days of projectors at home are coming to an end.

cable pitch
I need cables, but after reading descriptions of various types am confused as to how you know the pitch. Are they marked? If they are not marked, has anyone with less than perfect vision measued them? Even with magnification this would seem difficult. Any advice? Thanks

Use a magnifier and something with a sharp point to count the number of traces. Then hold a metric ruler across the FFC to measure the total distance from the left edge of the left-most trace, to the left edge of the right-most trace. Divide the distance by (number of traces minus one), and you get the pitch. (Which is almost always 0.5mm, by the way!)
I have never seen any markings on an FFC cable, but the process explained above is very quick & easy. Actually, with a good magnifier and a millimeter ruler, you can tell in an instant if the pitch is 0.5 mm: Every other trace will line up with one of the mm marks.
