Novar and Magnovals
Those fatter pins were down to us Euros with our "Magnoval" design. All else the same, but bigger pin diameter.
The EL/PL519 series is the most notable design using that base.
A nice Mullard PL504 in front of me has pins that measured 1,25mm - or 50 thou (mils) (0.050") in traditional money. Meanwhile, a Novar 6CJ6 appears to be ~ 1mm/40thou in the pins.

Western Electric was making the 9 pin "Magnoval" in 1956. I guess that everyone copied them. I have some WE 418A's that have .050 inch pins. The 8233 / E55L also has fat pins. I have made them both fit into 9 pin compactron sockets.
