Anyone Interested in 15" TFT Monitors on OHP's Discussion Only

Hi,
I'm only using a 70W MH bulb at the moment, the picture i get is a little too dark (like all movies were filmed at dusk/dawn) so i need more lumen. But the quality is very good already. At max focus I can clearly see every single pixel-triplet (screen door), but that can be helped by adjusting the focus.
I have no complaints about the FP557, it is 'easy' to dismantle, there are no flatcables between the boards to lengthen, and I dont see any ghosting.
Mounting the tft to the ohp is not easy, its just a glass plate with two pcb's attached to it. I just dropped it on my ohp and fixed it on 2 corners. I've glued! the small pcb to my ohp and screwed the big pcb on a metal support that is in turn screwed to the ohp (the big pcb sticks out too much to fix it directly to the top of the ohp)
Here are some pics: (sorry about the quality, this might explain why i haven't posted any results yet)

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

Hey,

rapsac, could you post a pic of the lcd on ur overhead but with the lights on so that I can see your layout for ideas, please? Like where you put the pcb's and everything.

Lifter, how do you shrink the image size in powerstip? I've downloaded it but can't see. Does it alow you to make it a custom res like 1000 x 750 (guessed figure) or what?

Thanks

Pics of the LCD on the ohp can be seen above, i'll post better pics when i get some progress.
I have also looked at powerstrip, but i can't see an option to change the desktop size without changing the resolution.
To display the entire 15" screen you need 0.4" extra horizontal on both sides, I dont know if the fresnel is that big.

I just noticed that picture. That looks like the same exact panel that's in the NEC 1545. I believe it's an LG and ends w/ X05 or something. All these people wondering which one is better or which one is easier to take apart. How funny.

@Lifter
I've posted the exact type of this panel on page 1 of this topic

The 'lcd on ohp' pic is the 2nd one from the bottom, cant get it any better sorry. (I've dropped a black piece of cardboard on the top of the ohp before i mounted the lcd on it, it screens out all light but the light that should go through the lcd)

disassembling lcd monitor

Would it be possible for someone to post the steps in the disassembly process? I would love to try this project, but I'm not sure where to start. Cut me some slack - I'm a woman. Please, somebody spell it out for me. Also, what else is needed with the lcd monitor? How would I input video?

Thanks for any help

Ps. Love this forum!

All panels come apart differently. Basically, just unscrew everything. There are pictures of disassembled panels all over this board you can look at. The key is to be very careful of the two boards actually connected to the glass. These are very fragile. In the case of most panels, these two boards are also connected to each other by a short ribbon cable, so in order to make the LCD transparent, you have to achieve the difficult task of lengthening it.

As far as video inputs go, you can use a TV tuner card for a PC, or if you don't want to use a computer, you can get video to VGA converters. Viewsonic makes a very nice one.

Hey, it works!!!

Just wanted to say thanks for the info. On 2/13/03 I went shopping for an lcd. Since I was unwilling to spend in excess of $300 on an lcd monitor just to tear it apart, I decided that for my first try at this I would go with a MOBILE MONITOR by InterAct. It cost $100 and has a 5.6" screen. I brought it home and ripped it apart (not really knowing what I was doing hahaha!)and stuck it into a frame I constructed out of 1/4" luaun (not sure how that is spelled) I had laying around. I thought my husband was going to kill me, but thankfully, it worked. The picture was very good actually, but I think I need a better light source. I mounted a light fixture in the bottom of the frame, wired a lamp cord to it, and used a 150 watt equivalent flourescent bulb. According to the package, the light output was 2700 lumens. I'm not sure what an increased amount of light will do. But, I am planning to make a bigger box with room for two bulbs to see how it turns out. If anyone has any suggestions, I appreciate the input. Thanks again.

Well, i've got my setup working with a very nice CDM-T 150W bulb and its getting time for my conclusion on the Benq FP557.
As Rainer noted the panel in this TFT only has 262K colors, although Benq states 16.7M on all their websites/specs.
Most of the time the lack of colors doesnt show, but it DOES show on parts of the screen with little color differences (like white clothes). They look washed out. So, I can't recommend this TFT anymore, find another TFT with a better panel!
Benq meanwhile has released a newer version (FP557s) with even better contrast ratio. I have mailed the Dutch Benq office with my complaints, but I dont expect they will do anything about it (Sending it back would require a lot of boxes to hold all the parts of the screen hehe)
This is the first time I wished I lived in the US, I think the threat of lawsuits etc. would be enough to get them to take this tft back 🙁
