Anyone ever used a Sony XL MC2 cartridge ?

I bought a cartridge on Ebay and it was described as an ortofon OM40. When it got here it was in an Ortofon OM40 box but turned out to be a Sony xl mc2. The man has offered a full refund or a half price discount if I keep it, but I can't find any info on this cartridge and am a bit worried that I wouldn't be able to get a replacement stylus.

Can anyone advise me

For £15, I'd give it a try. I think Musonic have some old stocks of the cartridges, but even if you can get a replacement "stylus", it'll probably cost more than you'd consider worthwhile (certainly more than £15).

Go for the half discount and have a play with it. If you don't like it you could always use it as exchange against a decent moving coil new.

By the way... Can't remember off the top of my head if it's a low or high output MC. You'll find out when you plug it in!

Well the sony cartridge is very obscure. Sony xl-mc2 sounds
like a moving-coil but could be a high output version.
If it has a replaceable stylus no chance of ever finding one.
Note a new stylus is usually 70% the cost of a new cartridge.

The OM40, which is no longer made is a very serious piece of
kit with a Fritz Gyger Stylus, the stylus being > 90% of the cost.

The OM30 is ~£100, so the OM40 is worth say ~£125.

Really depends on how much it will cost you, you can junk it after
it wears out.

But its worth far less than the OM40. how much less I don't know.

But I'd suggest less than a fifth of an OM40, not half.

On E-bay I doubt the XL-MC2 would sell at all, without details.

🙂 sreten.

It's a mid/low output MC, If I recall correctly. Made in an 'x' coil design, like the Adcoms from the same time. Sold for about $200-250 or so new. Removable stylus/coil assembly. pinkish/reddish and silver/grey colored. I've got a mint one around here somewhere. Not to bad sounding! Low mass, shape is alot like the ortofon/dual 165E units.

Unfortunately I have decided to send it back. I only have a MM phono stage and do not intend to upgrade it in the near future, so its a bit redundant. It sounded OK from what I got out of it (very quiet and quite distorted) with a very natural sound.

I recently picked one of these up (Sony XL-MC1) on ebay together with a pair of Ortofon T5 mini step-up transformers to use through my diy battery phono stage. I checked the stylus under a magnifying glass and it looked completely unused.

The sound to my ears is utterly engaging, very open and by far the best I have ever heard (used with a rega arm on a modded Lenco L75). I was surprised as it looks a bit plasticky in construction and the slide-out cartridge 'barrel' arrangement was a bit suspicious. If anyone knows any more about these cartridges I'd love to find out a bit about it.

It also came in a very smart pyramidical presentation case 🙂

I made a Lenco 75 and Decca International deck myself. Used lead sheet in the plinth to get up the weight. Sounds really nice and strong. Currently using a Goldring 1020 which sounds lovely. Want to upgrade to a 1040 in the future.

Hi Shoog,

I was using a Goldring 1012 (the one down from yours I think) until a few days ago. If the Decca arm can handle a MC you should try one because the Lenco can - the sound is in a completely different league from the Goldring MM
