If the drivers are mechanically coupled, the mounting baffles won't be moved by the mechanical force from the weight of the cones shifting in and out.
The speaker baffles can be tied together with wood stringers and achieve the same result- panels that don't vibrate too much.
Vibrating panels waste power and can make resonant noises, not good, HiFi fans!
