Anybody used the SB23MFCL45-4?

I haven't been able to find any impressions of this little subwoofer driver. I'm looking at it to build a small 22 litre sub for music only down to around 35Hz to carry the lower half octave or so. I've used plenty of SB Acoustics mid woofers but not any of their woofers. In the past I have used a Vifa M22WR for this purpose and it excelled with music.

I don't need it for HT as I have a Peerless 830452 that's great for that use but it's so so on music.

Will it be equalized? If yes, considering small sealed box, SB23MFCL45-4 is much superior in all areas to mentioned Vifa M22WR becouse of its higher strength motor and much higher linear excursion also with lower self inductance. It is very good 8" driver for such purpose.

Peerless P830452 is even better than mentioned SBAcoustics, in fact it is one of the best 10" subwoofer drivers ever made and it will work like a charm in 22 dm3 sealed box. Affordable and not too bulky, which is also beneficial in constrained spaces.

Ted... see email.

No equalisation as it will be a vented design. The speakers that it will be used with do enough bass most of the time. There's only a few albums where a little extra in the lower octave help (such as Bela Fleck etc).

The Peerless 830452 driver you mention according to Parts Express' site has the following T/S parameters:

Fs 22
Qts .23
Vas 67L

Work like a charm? Doesn't look like it would do much at all with these T/S in a sealed box.

Hi rabbitz,
I'm wondering if you might have meant the SB 8 ohm version, as it looks like it's considerably more suited for a 22L sealed box.

After seeing that OP wants to put it into vented box I am off the thread. I use sealed boxes only with DSP correction and appropriate drivers (too strong to align them properly in passive way, using just T-S nomenclature).

I am using one SB 23MFCL45-4 in a closed box about 0.9 ft^3 (about 25.5 L). I am using an older Hypex plate amplifier with it. In a small room; I am getting plenty of deep bass (16Hz!) which is very believable (ie accurate) on recordings with large pipe organs, etc. This is very well made and sounds great; I am only using it below 40Hz though, as a "true" sub-woofer AND my room size is fairly small. (If you have a larger room, one of these in a closed box will probably NOT provide enough SPL)

I am unable to provide a conclusion on this driver as the plate amp I'm using doesn't have enough gain or provide enough current even though it's rated at 200W into 4R. I've used the same type of plate amp on previous designs with no issues.

What I did hear is very promising and the build quality is exceptional. All I can say for anybody using the 4 ohm version is to make sure the amp has plenty of gain and power as the low driver SPL requires more thought on the amp side.

During tests I was lucky to get about 3mm of excursion where my 830452 was going nuts.

Design scrapped before it costs me and as it stands I only lost a bit of time and plywood.

I had the same problem. The "subwoofer ouput" jack from my stereo has a lower output signal level too low for my plate amp input. I bought a separate signal "boost" amplifier and that did the trick. I usually have to set the gain between +5 and +8 dB. I am now getting full output from the subwoofer. This unit is a "stereo line preamp" by MCM custom audio model 50-14820 and I think I bought it from Amazon.com. It has a high quality IC so no worries about degrading the fidelity. The only thing I don't like is that it has no power switch.

After reading the comments here i am convinced; gonna buy this woofer and make a nice box around it, with atleast a 300watt at 4ohms woofer. Always use bigger amps, so they will not clip and give enough juice 😉

If that aint enough, i make a linkwitz transform filter 😀
