I am building this. If it looks like this will be a different story.
If anyone is interested let me know. I plan to add firewire and usb to the front. It will house an nforce 2 motherboard, amd 2600xp, have room for 3 hard drives, an agp card probably ati 9500 pro clocked to 9700 pro, pci video for secondary display, and 1gig of ram.

you going to run that linux open source htpc software (forget what its called). Whats the little nob do?
yea, i would like info on it.

More details on the design? Some drawings please?
also, what are you going to use it for? gaming or just a HTPC? If it just for a HTPC in the living room, do check out mini-itx.com website. you could make a fanless HTPC using itx motherboard/C3 cpu. The designs on its website are very interesting. I would suggest it to anyone who wants to make costum PC.

You shouldn't have any problems, there are a lot of resources out there to work with. The cases are pricey ( http://www.digitalconnection.com/Products/Cases/ht200.asp ) but they look nice.
18wheeler,
Just curious if you have a mini-itx MB, and what you thought about it. I am consdering building a machine using one, but the reviews I have seen say they are too slow for decent gaming desktop.
Just wanted to hear what you thought about them.
Thanks,
BT
I plan on using only 1 motherboard, nforce 2. The integrate soundstorm 5.1 solution eliminates the need for a sound card.
The mini-itx just isnt fastenough for gaming, and i suspect for divx decoding either. The unit will be big, but the size will be like high-end audio gear like NAD and Luxman.
I will post more pictures today. I am not in this to make money, just pay for my tools and gear. I hope to simply sell a faceplate with vfd and ir receiver, knob, and slot integrated. That way a user simply attaches it to the front of a case, hooks up the power and usb leads, and they are off.
btw the knob will control volume, but i hope to make it multi-function as well.
Thanks guys!
ps I will make any pictures/plans/videos I have freely available to the forum.

yea. I would much rather have a standard 18 size case that would fit in with the dvd player, vcr, cable box, etc... you can put everything in a media rack. Mini itx would look a little weird in the mix.

No, I don't own a mini-itx MB. And I believe it is too slow for gaming. The top of the line is using a 1G C3 processor, which may be only as fast as a 1GHz Celeron (or even slower, consider it's low power consumption). But for a HTPC, it would be nice to have it for its silence (without CPU fan).
I am putting a Dell GX150 motherboard into a Sun Sparcstation IPC case (got this small case free, and it gives me a nerd feel 🙂 ) It works fine, but the PSU is a little bit loud. My ultimate HTPC project would be fitting a motherboard with sound build in (maybe video too), DVD-rom, TV tuner etc. into an old VCR or Amplifier case, which can blend into my audio/video rack 😀

Yeah, good idea. This one will have an integrated tivo system, remote, front panel firewire and usb. I hope to put in some silenx powersupply and fan products to see if it will be quiet. I am a newbie to case modding, so you guys will have lots of laughs. Anybody know how proto5 mounted his panel to his ohp?
I'm doing the same thing... but with an old JVC 200 disc cd changer. I want my av rack to look stock... not have a pc case in the middle of all my amps and dvd players... etc.
I liked the 200 disc cd changer because it has a clear door that I can stick a 5" LCD in for added effect. Plus the matrix LCD displays can be hooked back up for display temps, cd info etc...

ok there is 2 threads about htpc's now but one question i got to ask is what about boot up times? wouldnt it be strange to have everything up and running before the main unit (pc) up and running? i think a fast boot system would have to be incorporated to keep up with the amps ect, it doesnt matter that much but its my preferance
