OP mentions he is running Linux. Virtual Cable from VB-Audio is for Windows and is not available as a Linux version. There are existing (Linux) ways to do it.
Yes audio recorder is easy to install in ubuntu 16.04 and it will record what is playing on the pc but it also records whatever the mic picks up.
Did you choose the correct source in the recorder? Pulseaudio offers numerous sources to record from.
I have audio recorder installed and working but cannot find any digital source to record from. I will install pulseaudio.
