I'd like to save a few bucks by clamping on some snap ins instead of solder lug cans. Any tips for wiring snap ins without a PCB?

Think about clamping a hemostat on a pin, right at the body. Then "sister" a pigtail to the pin's tip. That way, the electrolyte doesn't get heated up.

They're all designed for wave solder for 10 seconds at 240 - 260C (RoHS compliant parts will be rated at the top of this range) so I don't think a couple of seconds with a solder iron is going to create any problem at all.
