Any recomendations for a compact enclosure useing FE87E or FE107

hi,
well just to get back to the original thread...
I'm quite decided for the amp6-basic amplifier from 41Hz.

Good idea. I love mine. I used a 60w SMPS, with an extra 4,000uF in caps added, and an air-core inductor, to filter out the high frequencies that the PSU created, as it wasn't happy driving a capacitive load. In my opinion, adding the extra caps changed the sound a little. The bass improved, but the midrange slightly deteriorated. Try it with and without, see what you think.

Chris

PS - when I unleashed it upon some valve enthusiasts, they loved it, because it didn't sound like a transistor amp, but had grip in the bass that most valve amps dream of. The only problem for them was that it didn't glow, and channel seperation wasn't perfect (dual monoblocks would be the answer, but the amp can't be bridged... Still, good for bi-amping to a sub or some woofers.).

PPS - I tried it with a pair of Saburos (I hope that's how you spell it), and it didn't show itself up, even on the end of the revealing Fostex drivers.

chris:

fair enough; I've heard more than a few commercial & DIY chip / class T amps (but not the one you mentioned) using the same basic power devices to realize they're not all created equal, so my comment was based only on personal exposure.

Chris - I wasn't aware you had made a comment (checking back through the thread, I'm pretty sure you haven't).

They're certainly worth the asking price if you're prepared to give it a try...

OK, a senior's moment - I did comment somewhere (or did I just think it ? 😕) , that a particular Fostex enclosure design might possibly reveal more about the Class T amp than the owner was previously aware. OIW, it's been my experience that the forward and midrange presence of many Fostex drivers, particularly during their break-in period, does little to hide issues of power supply noise, graininess, etc., of less than well executed chip or class T amps.

You might've posted elsewhere...

I tried mine with DTB's Saburos at Owston. People agreed that it sounded good.

PSU noise isn't an issue if you add the correct components (single inductor seems to do it - the audible sound is actually pulses of a much higher frequency). Of course, a "proper" PSU would be more appropriate, ie, transformer, full-wave rectifier and lots of caps.

or as some would suggest, a big-a$$ battery supply

Not feasible in the bedroom system I have (then again, neither are my floorstanders, but that never stopped me). Cable routing seems to be an issue on potential ground loops (though the cable is properly screened and not cheap...). I suppose batteries could be fun to take a small system to college on occasion. One guy on the 41Hz forum used it with a pair of cheap 12"+tweet PA speakers for a festival, including 2 parties at over 200 each. Not bad for 2x15w into 8ohm.

Anyway, back on topic?
