I'm looking at getting some 18" sub drivers for from US (parts express) shipping is expensive (to UK) so i am wondering if there is any interest out there in these 18" drivers?
id be looking at getting at least 4 to make it worth while, i need one. any one up for splitting the costs to get one themselves?
Dayton Audio RSS460HO-4 - unit cost: £237 not including shipping
UM18-22 18" Ultimax - unit cost £232 not including shipping
shipping is £302, US to UK
buying 4 units + shipping brings cost to about £301 total per unit including shipping and fees
buying 8 units + shipping brings cost to about £263 total per unit including shipping and fees
there is a company in EU selling them for £381, this is plan B if no one is interested

I am pondering selling either built or flat pack enclosures for each "Marty" design if there is interest in the UK.

Serious question: have you considered any of the pro audio 18" subwoofers that are available in the UK?
Some of them offer similar amounts of linear excursion, and much more tolerance towards thermal abuse.

Don't forget import taxes and handling fees.
parts express state in their International Shipping Information that the economy international carrier rate shown at checkout is the landed cost and included S&H, customer fees, and broker fees.
I will double check with Parts express and contact the UK customs Bureau for specific regulations on these items to be sure.

I have considered pro audio 18" sub woofers here, the ones i can find that match or at least very similar to the DA ones are two to three times the price.
any suggestions otherwise will be greatly appreciated.

Dayton is also available in Europe, do probably better option
the only EU distributor i can find is SoundImports, they stock one of the units but charge £381 as opposed to £232 (pending response from UK customs bureau)
do you know of any others?
Thanks.

found the dayton EU dist list...there are 8! UK dist (wall of sound) does not stock them (sent an email to ask if they can source them anyway). other dist all 410Euro - 450Euro, way more than US price. clarification on custom fees will show if its worth it or not to import them myself from US.
Fane Colossus Prime 18XS is 250£ each at bluearan, and you get free delivery in the UK. Do not see the point of ordering the Dayton.
Also, RCF LF18X401 is 225£, and then there's the Beyma 18PWB1000Fe at 237£ that looks pretty good.
Edit:
Faital Pro 18HW1070 is just over 290£, and has 13mm xmax, starts getting expensive.
RCF LF18X451 13.5mm and 312£
Beyma 18LEX1600Nd 14.5mm and 300£
Faital Pro 18XL1800 20mm and 372£

cheers. did not know of these, they look excellent.
although, forgive me if i'm missing something but, the Fs is 33hz vs the 19hz of the DA Ultimax, the xmax is also 10mm less, for the same price.
Dayton Audio RSS460HO-4 - unit cost: £237 not including shipping
UM18-22 18" Ultimax - unit cost £232 not including shipping
shipping is £302
So two RSS460HO-4 cost 776£ total.
And two UM18-22 cost 766£ total.
Compare:
2 x RSS460HO = 776£
2 x Beyma 18PWB1000Fe = 468,76£
Compare:
2 x UM18-22 = 766£
2 x Faital Pro 18XL1800 = 738.86£
How much the cone can move dictates how much SPL you can get down low, a PA driver is more sensitive, sure, it rolls off differently to a pure sub, but that does not mean the hi-fi sub will be any louder at low frequencies. Membrane area and xmax are the most important parameters, qts/fs just tells you a little bit about when and how the driver will roll off.
Try running a few hornresp sims, I seriously doubt you really need two of the UM18-22/Faital Pro 18XL1800.

Thanks for the T/S info, its been a while since I got my head round them.
I agree x2 units is considerable overkill for my application, it was my intention to source one DA driver sharing the other (3+) units with other people to reduce costs.
the Beyma 18PWB1000Fe has me interested, excellent parameters and a great price. Im going to have a good look over each of these drivers you mentioned and calc bass reflex designs to see what size each of them will end up.
thanks again for the suggestions.
Don't forget to look at the Eighteensound drivers range. EU made.
Good stuff from former RCF workers. I own some 12'' & 15'' and like them.

Perhaps there's still some misunderstanding. I think 2 x 18" sounds like a very good idea, big thumbsup to stereo subs!
And IMO I would rather have a 2 x 15" setup than 1 x 18".
I was questioning the need for 20mm xmax, takes a lot of power, path of diminishing returns and all that.

Id love stereo subs but its more of a space / wife balance thing. I can have 1 sub in the room, way i seen it was go for the biggest the sub allocated space will allow.
may as well lay this out to state the case:
I have space in the room for 1 sub
sub will be used for AV
max volume for enclosure : 250 l
amps available:
x2 amps 2 ch @ 900W into 8Ω (mono) caudio ra2000 linear PSU
x1 amp 4 ch @ x2 800W into 8Ω (mono) caudio CX404 SMPS
I will be building the enclosure myself
ported enclosure
Im looking at spending about £300 on the driver

Update on the Dayton import option:
While part express will offer economy shipping all fees included as landed in UK, they do however state a max weight on the order of 35kg for this service. meaning only 1 driver could be ordered - waste of time as shipping is £300
shame as they sell the RSS460HO-4 18" for £240. currently the cheapest vendor is sound imports at £381 from EU.
thanks to KaffiMann i am now exploring other options available in EU closer to my budget

When tuning your bass reflex enclosure you may want to consider making your port longer than normal to reduce the size of the enclosure and tuning lower than normal to increase LF output capability at the expense of flat response. If you look at the equations for a Helmholtz resonator you can see that you can trade off box size against port length:
Helmholtz resonance - Wikipedia
The main constraint on port length is that it will have a 1/4 wavelength pipe mode. So I wouldn't go over a 1m long port. Also the port needs to have sufficient cross section to avoid excessive wind speed. For an example of a bass reflex optimised for maximum LF output rather than flat response see:
dB v2
If your space limited you should sell those amps and buy a more powerful amp like an inuke60000, you could get two 4 ohm drivers and wire one to each channel.

thanks for the info, i will apply this to my cabinet considerations.
the amps were a freebe from a hotel that were upgrading their PA. The Inuke has been in my sights for a while. selling the x3 amps is a possibility especially as it will bring DSP with the Inuke. currently one of the caudio amps is powering the 12" sub that i want to replace. the other two are surplus.
"you could get two 4 ohm drivers and wire one to each channel" are you suggesting two drivers in one cabinet? there is really only one place i could put a single sub in the room.
