You think lead is bad? Every solder joint, even lead-free, generates a small thermocouple voltage. It's not normally a problem, but when you do metrology at the parts-per-million level, it shows up. Leeds & Northrup (and maybe others) used to sell special low thermal EMF solder. Great stuff, but it was an alloy of cadmium. They used to paint the solder joints in their equipment green to identify the ones with the cadmium low EMF stuff. Just more trivia to contaminate your minds
