Any Experience With Empire Grenadiers?

Has anyone experienced or done a build similar to the Empire Grenadiers from the 60s? The claim is a mass loaded and ported woofer apparently firing through a short horn directly at the floor of the enclosure and radiating through a circumferential slot.

no 1st hand experience, but you need a response.

as i recall from the literature this was simply a down-firing woofer in the cabinet. the bass radiated into the room apparently from the slot. it was one of empire's attempts at an omni-directional speaker.

I had similar looking speakers about 11 years ago. I don't know of they were Empire Grenadiers (the mid-tweeter did not have a plate like that IIRC), but they were also six-sided and also had the round granite (or was that marble?) plate on top, with a 10" bottom firing woofer (I think that was the size, but I can't remember). I got them from a buddy. One thing that stands out in my mind until today was the sound- it was excessively, piercingly bright. I eventually resorted to putting a layer of tissue in front of the tweeter. This made them better, but they were still very bright. Too many layers of tissue and the brightness would disappear, but so would all detail and they would sound very dull. I ended up giving them away after just a short while.

Enjoy,
Deon
