Antek toroids recommadation

I need toroids for my aleph j and f3 project. I'm no sure wich of the Antek toroids to purchase. They have a new line of audio toroids but the max Va is 400. So I'm in a dilemma, Should I buy the AS-4218 or the AN-5218. The AS-4218 have static shield between primary and secondary, but it is 100va less. What the tradeoffs between those 2 toroids ?

Thanks

I have a 600VA AS-6218. Nice transformer, and not very much more $$ than the 400 or 500va models. Big enough for a later project if I ever want to cannibalize my F5. (which I doubt I would do...) 🙂

I didn't see a AS-6218 listed on their site. I only see an AN-6218. If they have a 600VA with static shield that would be nice. What was the cost?

Are you going with one per channel, or one to drive both channels

Both Channel.

By the way, I use an-4218 for my f5, but I think my ac line got a lot of dc, that's why the transfo make a lot of mechanical hum. I install in the f5 som big caps with bridge rectifier to get rid of the dc. It help, but the hum is still there. So, does static shield help to reduce mechanical hum ?

Thanks

I've had a half dozen Anteks. They are great. While I don't really notice a difference, I like the shielded versions for the few extra dollars. I tend to buy one size bigger than I need for freedom in the future.

Remember, they are spec'ed for an extra 20% VA over what they're marked for. So a 400VA can deliver 480VA.

I've had a 50VA, few 400VA, 500VA and even an 800VA- all great.

Perhaps most importantly, Jon at Antek is very responsive and helpful.

i have to say i'm quite impressed with the audio grade ones also. i bought a box full of stuff from them (well actually 2 boxes) got 2 x AS-4215, 2 x AS-3218, 2 x AS-0532 and 1 x AS-0509. I tried to arrange to add a shield to AN-5415, to make an AS-5415 (more for the 4 secondaries than 500va), but i'm not sure Jon understood, because all i kept getting was corrected quotes. Jon was indeed responsive which is reassuring when taking such a big jump down (at least in cost) from fully custom units from Richard Sumner.

These units are all for semi experimental builds, but i'm pretty happy initially with the performance, i will eventually replace a few of them with custom units and enlist them back into proto duties, but by no means do i need to do that. i bought some spectral dynamics sorbethane type toroid washers just in case vibration becomes an issue, they are oversized for their respective jobs, so i doubt i will.

indeed Nelson, the 300va i got are almost the same size as the 400va

I can vouch for the build quality and performance of thier produts. The one I have in my system now is 200VA, it replaced an Avel 250VA that developed a mechanical buzz. It out performs the old one in every way, even actual power output capabilities, and runs cooler doing it. Highly recommended.
